you have to create these emotional crescendos while sticking within a musical genre without overusing a similar artist or sound

and if you're on cassettes (which i am) you have to divide the playlist in two at the 45 minute mark (which is thematically interesting, as you can have one side of the tape embody one emotion and the other side, its complete opposite) which can be tricky and annoying and limiting

Concert composition is something you pick up with experience.

I used to manage my friend's band and had to make up the performance schedule for their gigs, and at first they weren't all that great.

It's a good idea to start with something exciting, then go to something with a fun bridge, slow it down with something sad, and ride that sadness with something soft and hopeful.

There's no right away to end a mix tape, it just depends on the type of taste you want led in your mouth.

Sol's got the general idea. Deciding the feel you want a record to end on is the hardest bit. For a live show it's fucking easy, go out with a fucking bang. We used to close our shows with a hardcore cover of Folsom Prison Blues because I'd go balls out on some screams and the guitar player could just solo for four minutes and it was always a good time.

But cd arrangement is different and you can end that shit on whatever emotion you want.
