is it someone's job to do that, like a janitor or something?

or are they just placed by some random good samaritan? if so, do you need somebody's permission first?

i've never seen somebody actually place one before, and i've always wondered

if anyone can place them, then would i be morally obligated to place an "out of order" sign on a vending machine if it malfunctions after just one try?

if not, how many times do i have to keep trying before i can be sure it's broken? is there some other way to know

Verbatim, what?
if you don't need any authorization, i wonder if anyone has ever gotten in trouble for placing "out of order" signs on a bunch of shit that wasn't actually out of order

the staff
if that's the case, i think that's unfortunate, because if something is broken, the patrons are going to be the first to notice, and staff can't always respond in a timely fashion

i don't generally see staff floating around vending machines, either, so it's not like i could easily notify somebody if i wanted to

that's a lot of potentially wasted quarters

The penny press machines in our stores would break down often, they're older pieces of equipment. One of the stores is all busy, all the time. So one of my cast will usually call in between transactions for me to come and take a look at it, I'll just slap an Out of Order sign on it and call the repair people and then be on my way. We usually have a box of pennies already pressed in case someone lost their money to it, if not we just open up the register and give them back whatever they put in.

We knew the world would not be the same.
A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent.
I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita.
Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty
and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says,
"Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.."
I suppose we all thought that one way or another.
I would generally think that it'd be staff. They aren't authorized/trained to handle a repair, but they put the sign up and inform whatever authority they're supposed to. I don't think there's anything stopping a good samaritan from doing it either, though.

depends on the business but it’s usually just a random employee that decides to do it, or is told to do so, after the business learns from customers about a machine that “ate their money/token” or something

Goodness gracious, great balls of lightning!
When I did janitor work at a Target, I had to put those signs on toilets, water fountains, and sinks that didn’t work

Long live NoNolesNeckin.

Ya fuckin' ganderneck.
What I'm wondering is what random person/customer is gonna be walking around with a marker, paper, and tape to put a sign up.

It's the staff's job. Generally if they found the broken item, they get the joys of putting up a sign and doing lockout/tagout paperwork and informing the manager.
