Your brain can't see light or hear sounds. It relies on third party interpretations for data. It fills in the blanks to be more efficient. That filling in can be proven to be wrong

The cool thing is that there's a massive, life-changing difference between knowing this intellectually and knowing this through experience

And that this, in itself, is a hallucination. Like an alcoholic realizing they're drunk, but it's about how your brain is perceiving the world around it.
