Christmas morning was always so much more magical for me when I believed in Santa. My parents and I would put out milk and cookies, carrots for the reindeer, and some years I'd try and set traps to catch Santa in the act.

So fuck yeah, I want my kids to feel that same magic.

I'm going to tell them that Santa isn't real because I don't see how believing in a magical sweatshop owner helps them during early childhood development. Christmas is about giving and spending time with your loved ones, not commercialism.

That said, we will be doing most of the traditions (Christmas tree, family dinner, snowmen, etc.).

I'd tell them about Santa and explain that it's just a story at the same time. I would also tell them to be respectful to others that might believe in him to try and avoid any shit that might happen.

I'll play it by ear. I was pretty much fine when I heard he wasn't real, and I don't see a reason for it to negatively impact one's trust on their parents. But then again, I guess I was only concerned about a stable influx of presents at Christmas, and my mindset on such matters was pretty uncommon (presumably) for an 8 year old.

Of course my son and future children will believe in Santa. Probably until age 10-11 when I feel they are ready, I'll tell them the truth.

Kids need that magic and wonder in their lives to experience an actual childhood.

Yeah, sure. I don't remember being particularly disappointed when I figured out Santa wasn't real. And, more specifically, it wasn't an "Oh, aha!" moment, it was a very gradual erosion of my belief that was never influenced by anything other than my own realizations.
