The only thing she did was stupidly lower the shield and other than that she did nothing at all. She wasn't even with Ren when he went planet side. Every scene she had in the movie could have been done by some random person. Some random captain could have told Ren about Finn. Then for the base some random could have been forced to lower the shield. To me it would have made more sense to have some random lower the shield than this loyal trooper who wasn't even forced to lower it. She bitched at Finn for taking his helmet of but she pretty much willingly lowered the shield to her. That's just stupid writing right there.

For her character type I know she's supposed to be the Boba Fett of the trilogy but at least with him his first movie appearance was set up far better than hers. With Fett everything he done in Empire could only be done by a single character. Somebody had to find Solo and this same person had to take him to Jappa. With CP on the other hand like I said every scene she did could have been done by different people and the out come would be the same.

Before I saw the movie today I've been thinking she had a larger role due to all the merchandise she has and due to her being a unique character. I know this is her first movie but what we seen of her was what you said a lack of presence.

I really wish they'd forced some officer lackey to do it rather than Phasma. But maybe being held at gunpoint to betray the Order gave her a personal reason to be a bigger villain later on.

I remember seeing a production photo of her standing on Takodana, I wonder if that got scrapped.

Here's what could have happened instead: Solo and Finn just find a random trooper to shut down the shields. He says, "please don't kill me, I don't want to die...I was raised against my will to fight." Finn says I know...tells other trooper to find a ship and get the hell out of here. Movie is about hope after all right? Seeing another defector would emphasize that. I found it hard to believe Phasma would so casually lower the shield generators without fighting to the death. Well, I mean maybe she had no choice against three, one being a Wookie. I have a feeling Phasma will be punished in VIII.

How is this nitpicking though? It's a legitimate criticism. You have someone who is supposed to be this major character yet you do nothing of significance with them.
She was unused exept for that funny moment when she got captured by Finn. She literally contributed less than Boba Fett did.

You know what else had that exact same problem (Albeit far far worse)

As much as I liked General Hux for bringing back the whole space Nazi feel to the ~~Empire~~ First Order, I think maybe having Phasma fill that role instead would have at the very least given her something to do...
That or Replace TR-8R with her and just not have her get shot...maybe have the X Wings come in then

I said that because of his comment about being nitpicky. To me it's implying he watches the prequels and this movie without finding any faults with them or at least not finding faults in small things which can be easily done.

Abrams stated she's his favourite character so I imagine she has more characterisation in the next installments.

There was also supposed to be a scene for how Poe managed to get back to the Resistance after him and Finn crash landed on Jakku, and a political intrigue scene for Leia's sleeper agent within the New Republic. All of them got axed, so I guess you can chalk up lack of Capt. Phasma screen time to time management.

Or after fighting Finn she gets shot by the X-Wings. armor smoldering, and the audience believes she's dead. And then just use a random trooper to shut down the shields and she's back for the next film...
