Does The Labeling Of Music Affect Your Choice?

Does the sole fact that something is mainstream or popular turn you away from it?

I think that someone who turns away mainstream music because it's mainstream is just as bad as the people who listen to it
I don't think that music can be objectified and have a clear good or bad

Also, calling someone hipster or shunning them for the music they do listen to is terrible practice and shows more about you than them

Personally, I try to judge music based on the song or album itself but yes it does irk me if it's mainstream even if it shouldn't

I thought about this today and how music is more of a means for social status these days more so than for the music

What do you think?

Ehh, not really. I tend to be more critical of something if it is particularly mainstream though - if it's really popular, does it deserve to be?

Whether or not something is popular or not is irrelevant to me.

However, categorizing into genres affects my choice to a degree, yes. If something is categorized into a genre that I don't particularly care for overall then I'm, more than likely, not going to bother with it. That isn't to say I automatically dislike any and everything categorized into whatever specific genre, it just saves me time when looking for new music.

Not really. I usually put my music on radio/shuffle mode, so I barely even see what artists are designated as these days.

Not really, but for me if a friend recommends me amainstream artist i will listen to a whole album once, and if it is mainstream i will be kind of wary and may not like it first round but that is due to bias, so i make sure i listen to it at least a second and third time before i can get over the bias, and see if it is good or not. Usually they are kind of okay. Some good some not that good but usually at an OK standard.
