you kinda doeven if I did come up with it, who cares? I wouldn't have the means to produce a film around it
Quote from: SecondClass on September 17, 2016, 10:40:43 AMyou kinda doeven if I did come up with it, who cares? I wouldn't have the means to produce a film around iti'm just saying--the word "pretentious" just gets thrown around all the time, and it seems like another non-word to describe anything that you don't like, anything you don't understand, or anything you wish you had the talent to write or come up with
maybe that's just you being triggered by a word a lot of people use correctlypretentious is a very specific word that refers to when something is so full of itself yet masquerades as high-high-concept art. Which fits Memento to a t.

obsessed with itself, thinks it's the best thing ever even before it's released, etcreally not a hard phrase to grasp
Quote from: SecondClass on September 17, 2016, 10:51:08 AMobsessed with itself, thinks it's the best thing ever even before it's released, etcreally not a hard phrase to graspyou just keep piling on more meaningless definitions"obsessed with itself"--what does that meanhow can a movie be obsessed with itself
When the movie clearly parades itself around with unnecessary camera angles, concepts, or cinematic techniques that while flashy, serve no use in the broader themes or meanings of the film. It's like if I wrote a novel and used a cursive font for the entire text.

It's like if I wrote a novel and used a cursive font for the entire text.maybe you want to give the impression that the entire story is some character's diary--that's not pretentiousanyway, it seems that i was rightyou personally deem those techniques unnecessary (ie. you don't like them) and that = pretentiousthat's a very pretentious way of going about expressing your dislike of a film
when something is done for style alone, and no content reason, it's pretentiousnot personal dislike or like

everything you do in a film should contribute to what the film is about or what it's trying to expressif the main character is clinically depressed and the movie is in black and white, the style has a content reasonif it's just because the creator thought it looked cool, that's being pretentious

I can't think of a single notable director who doesn't do it for both reasons.
you can, but one reason makes the film needlessly pretentious and one doesn'tthis whole "you just say it as a synoynm for dislike" business is asinine - I would just say I disliked the movie
TDK was good, but not a great Batman film.
