Do you have any more to say on Grave of the Fireflies

I never want to see it ever again
Looking back, I suppose I can understand why no one has ever recommended it to me. I remember feeling extremely bitter about that, because across my six or seven years hating anime, I've made my tastes quite clear—I would give people a long laundry list of things that I did not want to see, but my folly was that I never really gave anyone a list of things that I do want to see.

Most weebs probably default to not recommending anything like Grave of the Fireflies, mostly because of how much of a downer they are. It's like popping in Requiem for a Dream at a party when you're all in the mood for a lighthearted comedy or something.

But this really is my kind of movie. Not just because it's a downer (though I do love my sob stories)—but because of how effectively it's able to channel those emotions. I hate unearned pathos in movies so much, it can really make or break a movie for me. Had GotF been directed ANY differently, I may have given it a 2/10. But there are so many of these subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) elements that you pick up on throughout the film, especially early on, all of which help to gradually envelop you in the ensuing tragedy.

Lots of anime films do this, but the difference is that it pays off. Albeit, it pays off in an incredibly heart-wrenching fashion, but it's the first anime I've seen that actually had a valuable message. Things that you can actually take away from and keep within you for the rest of your life, beyond just the anti-war stuff. Though, it's important to note that Takahata has repeatedly stated that it's not an anti-war film—which is fortunate, because if it were, I wouldn't have enjoyed the movie as much.

You can take it as an anti-war film, but that's not really how it's meant to be taken. Instead, I view it as an honest and candid examination of human nature. This is who we are, this is how we've always been. We can change it, but if we want to change it, we have to engage ourselves in higher thinking. Empathy is the key to a better future and whatnot. Failure to apply the golden rule will always result in us destroying ourselves.

I don't give the film a 9/10 or a 10/10, because I've gotten these messages elsewhere in plenty of Western war films, but the particular framing of the story was unique and well-executed enough to make my brain go, "Okay, I'm watching a quality film right now." Plus, it managed to rend the cockles of my heart a little bit, which no other anime has ever been able to do (not that most of them even try).

And so the trek through the year 1995 begins.

Disclaimer: Even weebs probably won't give a fuck about any of these shows.

I rewatched Ghost in the Shell, and my opinion on it has not changed (still a 2/10). I'm also in the process of rewatching Evangelion, because in retrospect, I think it deserves it.

Armitage III: Polymatrix (Hiroyuki Ochi, 1996, AIC) This movie is a condensed version of the original four-episode OVA of the same name (sans subtitle), which I thought would be a little bit more convenient for my sake. But holy shit, do I ever regret watching it this way. At first, I thought this was going to be some kind of off-brand Ghost in the Shell—mainly because of the cyberpunk setting, and the stupid sultry female protagonist—but interestingly enough, it actually predates it (the film, obviously; not the manga), yet it still manages to be just as vapid, hilariously enough. The same tired old cyberpunk trappings that I've come to develop a massive distaste for are all at the forefront, and I'm never going to get those two hours back. What a shame. 2/10

The Diary of Anne Frank (Akinori Agoaka, 1995, Madhouse) Just read The Diary of a Young Girl, for fuck's sake. This has to be the most unnecessary adaptation of anything ever. 5/10

Elf Princess Rane (Dangun Pictures, 1995, first part) I wasn't going to put any text here, but I can't ignore the elephant in the room that this was a really weird thing for me to watch. The only reason I tried it is because it was released in close proximity to my birthday, and perhaps I thought that my birth would've torn a rift of serendipity within the anime industry, but evidently, that wasn't the case. This is the first time an anime has gotten me to think to myself, "What the fuck am I doing? I am literally wasting my time right now. I should probably stop doing this." Next anime. 1/10

El-Hazard: The Magnificent World (AIC, 1995, three episodes) Very standard fare. I realize that the harem stuff is part of the show's appeal, but it's so fucking tame by today's standards to where it all just feels kind of sterile and awkward. 4/10

Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play (Studio Perriot, 1995, three episodes) Another old shoujo that is incredibly far removed from my demographic, and I have no business watching it, so I didn't watch much. It's certainly nothing special, but I don't actually mind any of the characters or their designs, which is very rare for me to say. It's just not a very compelling story, and nothing particularly interesting happens. 5/10

Golden Boy (APPP, 1995, completed) As dumb and as borderline offensive as this stupid-ass show is, it did make me laugh out loud. Multiple times. It might just be the funniest anime I've ever seen, and as much as I ultimately dislike the show (just because it's stupid, and I refuse to enjoy stupid things), I can't take that away from it. Call it a guilty pleasure. The best part is that it's rather short, but it IS extremely raunchy, so bear that in mind if you happen to check it out. 7/10

it's not like i watch whole series; i drop shows if i'm not enjoying myself, which is most of the time

i list the number of episodes i watch in the parentheses, though it's admittedly less clear with things i've completed

golden boy only has six episodes

Oh yeah I recognize you don't always watch the full thing, I think it's just the sheer amount / the completed shows that makes it feel like a lot.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
Most weebs probably default to not recommending anything like Grave of the Fireflies, mostly because of how much of a downer they are.
ill have you know i prefer moody shit over KAWAII SUGOI upbeat shows to feed my moody moods

By moody you mean something with special atmosphere? Maybe something weird but not unwanted... something that makes you thinking? Anyway, your top 10?

Yeah you could say a special atmosphere, thats one of my favorite traits of any media. Also upon a short review its more like 5 anime not counting 3 Evangelions <.<

Kyoukai no Kanata, Eureka Seven, Ga-Rei: Zero, Elfen Lied and Metropolis. Character centric tragedy stuff lol.
I stopped scoring because i wasnt confident in them, like some of the 9's could be 10 but aiunno really.

Is it just me or is there a very angry bee buzzing about hating anime?
