basically

the word "anime" literally just means "animation" in japan, so in their tongue, everything is an "anime"

there's some debate about the stipulations, which is why some people opt to say "japanese animation" if you want to be crystal clear

I would have said the "anime" label pertains a number of themes/tropes/cliches found in a great deal of Japanese media, and thus some American animation could be considered and anime (likewise, some Japanese animation could "transcend" anime.)

"anime-esque" or "anime-inspired" is as far as i'd go with that tbh

the reason the definition is so restrictive is because it makes it easier to draw a line in the sand between what's anime and what isn't, whereas your definition kinda makes it a little bit foggier and less clear-cut

that said, even if we were to go with that standard, i would argue that, overall, Avatar: TLA's characters, themes, sense of humor, and even its sense of pacing are far more western than eastern—the only thing that's really anime-esque about it is the artstyle

it's kinda like calling star wars a work of science fiction (rather than fantasy), just because it takes place in space and borrows some elements from that genre

The Garden of Words (Makoto Shinkai, CoMix Wave Films, 2013) Just watch this XXXTentacion video instead. 5/10

A Silent Voice (Makoto Shinkai, CoMix) It's incredible how one man can make the same movie over and over again, and people continue to eat it up every single time. None of them offend me to my core or anything, but... I've seen this shit. 5/10

Cromartie High School (Production I.G, 2003, four episodes) Not a terrible show, but I don't have any desire to watch it further. It's not doing anything to hold my attention, and I don't feel at all connected to the subgenre that it's clearly parodying. It also looks a lot like Fist of the North Star, which is a style that I don't find very easy on the eyes, and overall, there's just nothing too special about it. I'm over it. 5/10

Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Madhouse, 1988, two episodes) Unbelievably boring garbage. 4/10

Yu-Gi-Oh! (Toei, 1998, five or six episodes) Also known as season zero, I guess? I didn't even know this shit even existed, except for that one reference to it in LittleKuriboh's Abridged Series ("Screw the rules, I have green hair!"). I don't really know what to say about it, other than that I'm kinda fascinated that it's even a thing. Unlike the more popular Gallop show, the card game isn't really the focus, and a lot of fucking weird shit happens. Almost too weird. The only reason you would watch it is to have a giggle at all the weird stuff that happens, especially to contrast with the other show. It's basically just a meme, and doesn't have much value beyond that. 3/10

i think i'm finally coming to grips with weeb language now

"does this anime contain any fanservice"

if their response is "i don't think so," then there will be at least ten or twelve scenes where the main female character gets groped or fucked onscreen

if their response is a confident "no," then there will be at least five or six

if they say "none at all" and they're extremely adamant about it, then there will at least be one or two

and if they say "yes," it's hentai

weebs aren't capable of honesty, so you have to learn their language

I'm a weeb who doesn't even mind fanservice most of the time and this bugs me as well TBH. I know too many people like this.

I'm p sure at this point if I ever watch anime my eyes just glaze over during fanservice bits, because unless it's long enough that I skip ahead I never remember it afterward.

"flaming nipple chops"-Your host, the man they call Ghost.

To say, 'nothing is true', is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say, 'everything is permitted', is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.

Your arbitrary rating system puzzles me.
i actually spend a lot of time carefully thinking about what each number means, though my scale admittedly does work a bit differently for anime than other mediums

like, i wouldn't give a game or a movie a number until i'm actually finished with them; hence, those are ratings i'd like people to take more seriously, because there's a LOT of thinking behind the number

i've actually thought about making a video series where i talk in-depth about what each number on my scale means, and explain why i think numbered ratings are useful in the first place (because i think they get a bad rap)

it's different with anime though, because unlike a game or a movie, it's simply not reasonable to expect me to watch entire shows, especially if i'm absolutely hating it

this makes anime (and perhaps all television) a very shitty and disposable medium, because you're not really meant to be able to consume all of it; you're just meant to find what you like and watch it

so, even though i believe that's an extremely toxic way to consume and produce art, i don't have much of a choice--you may have noticed that i tend to enjoy anime films more than shows, and there's a reason for that

so my out-of-ten scale works differently for anime in the sense that it's an expression of how i personally felt after watching or dropping a show, and that's pretty much it--unlike in my game reviews, there's no attempt to be objective or balanced whatsoever, it's pure opinion

10/10 being there's an avalanche of joy and excitement crashing through my head

1/10 being there's a rainstorm of hatred and sadness pouring in my head

i give a lot of 5/10s, which can mean either indifference (most of the time), mixed feelings (rarely), or (occasionally) utter mediocrity

that all being said, numbers are numbers; the important thing is what i have to say

Saw Grave of the Fireflies recently and I have to agree with how great it is. I think you'll enjoy The Wind Rises because of the similar setting and tone. My wife also recommends Barefoot Gen, a similar story, if you want to be even more depressed than when you watched Grave of the Fireflies.

Okay, but it still seems strange that there's only a point's difference between "unbelievably boring garbage" and "not a terrible show", or how you can spend a paragraph talking about how great Angel's Egg is and then give a seven. What cost it the last three points, if you had nothing negative worth saying about it?

I wasn't expecting a serious response to that so I'm just going to keep pretending you throw a dart blindfolded to decide the scores.

Does the last airbender count as anime
depends on who you ask. the bulk of the animation was done by south korean studios and the narrative & visual art styles are obviously heavily influenced by anime. at the same time, the creators and primary writers are white american guys. personally i see ATLA as existing in a sort of between space, not entirely western or eastern in its totality.

another interesting case. it was animated by DC & WB's in house studios (the visual style does seem quite similar to anime conventions of the time) and the narratives drew from american comic lines. the guy who is credited as being that show's creator is japanese-american, and the guy who directed the most episodes has a chinese surname (michael chang).

i kinda see what you mean

i rated LotGH a 4/10 because, despite describing it as "unbelievably boring garbage," it's a matter of fact that there are several shows that have left me in a MUCH worse mood after finishing them

like, LotGH may have been boring, but it never outright annoyed or offended me, like TTGL or dragon maid have

paradoxically, there's a part of me that actually likes watching 2/10 or even 1/10 shows MORE than i enjoy watching 4/10s, because they can have that so-bad-it's-good quality about them

whereas 4/10s are just plain ol' bad, and don't have any entertainment value whatsoever

it's kinda like this

so that might explain why i tend to be harsher and more dismissive with my 4/10s, because they're not even fun to rant about

none of this shit is hard and fast though, and different cases are due to vary wildly based on the context

as for angel's egg's 7/10, it very well could be an 8/10, i just want to rewatch it
