It does not even need to be intelectual to be good. Just have some kind of damn substance; enjoyable characters, actual character development, something. Gurren Laggan and Kill la Kill were about as far from intellectual as you can possibly be, but at least they has substance as fun and exiting coming of age stories.

I have no problem with fan-service, but if that is literally all your anime is, or it gets to the point where it interferes with the tone of the show, then you should have just made hentai and not wasted people's time as if you were actually making something. Ecchi Harrem is about the most pointless genre in the history on anything related to entertainment and storytelling.
