A translated interview from the 2.0 CRC (Complete Records Collection) regarding Shinji & Rei/the ending of 2.0:

Long amount of text
Quote
>At what point did you decide that the climax would blend the story of episode 19 with elements of episode 23?
Tsurumaki: I had suggested that this would be a good idea, and it was [in place] from a very early stage. The original plan had been for "Break" to comprise episodes eight to nineteen. I thought this would be difficult. If the number of episodes covered would be large in any case, I thought we should instead increase the range to include episode 23, and free up the third part onwards. I thought it would be unpleasant to leave "homework."
>So you could admit new elements in the future?
Tsurumaki: Right. There was a feeling that we wanted the difficulties to be, as far as possible, confined to "Break," because we wanted a situation where we would be able to try various things in the third part. So, after Rei's death in episode 23, Kaworu comes to Shinji; we attempted a structure similar to the TV series. But, in the end, Rei didn't die........
>Instead, it seemed that Shinji and Rei "got together."
Tsurumaki: There is probably some other intention there, so I think you should check with Anno-san [about that]. However, because there was a feeling that Rei III had been poorly developed in the TV series, after Rei II died in "Break," we wanted to develop in detail the drama of Rei III in "Q."

>So it's something you were not able to fully realize in the TV series. "Because I am the third" is an amazingly impactful, famous line of dialogue, but, in truth, I felt that [Rei III] didn't really mean much after that.....
Tsurumaki: I thought going deeply into that would be interesting, even in a "Science Fiction"-like way. As Rei realizes the fact, and the significance of the fact, that there has been more than one Rei before her, how, as a clone, will she achieve her independence as an individual? I wanted to develop a story like that. However, it was decided that Rei wouldn't die, and, in the climax of "Break," we strongly and actively push the idea of "Rei and Shinji being brought together," a development taken over from "Prelude."
>That was an extraordinarily surprising development.
Tsurumaki: Because it's even linked with the motivation for having Asuka pilot Unit-03, it ended up being a stronger way of developing things than I thought.
>There's one thing that mystified me. Despite the fact that the original scenario for the climax was different, in "Prelude" Gendou mentions something like a "love love strategy" intended to bring Rei and Shinji closer together. Why does that appear to be consistent [with "Break"]?
Tsurumaki: Anno-san probably hasn't thought about that very deeply.

>Eh? That wasn't foreshadowing?
Tsurumaki: We on the staff had a conversation about that dialogue from "Prelude," wondering if it was okay to have [Gendou] say that. Not to mention that I thought Rei II was going to die in "Break."
>Then why, despite that, was there a consistency?
Tsurumaki: This is evidence that the story was developed, not with an "inductive" technique, but with a "deductive" one. "He already said it there, so we have no choice." It's something like a methodology where [the story] is adjusted, even forcibly, to be consistent with what has already been done.
>This is quite a shock (laughing)! Surely, immediately following "Prelude," there are people who grin and say of the "love love strategy," "This is a big change!" Surely it leaves a strong impression on everyone. As a result, they will surely think during "Break," "Ah, as I thought, those two were brought together!"
Tsurumaki: The impression that Anno-san mainly wanted to convey was that Gendou and Fuyutsuki were devising a secret plot. Because Shinji happens to go to Rei's room just after that, that was what they discussed. When "secret plot" and "Shinji and Rei" were combined, it probably appeared something like "a strategy to bring together Shinji and Rei."

>Rather than being disappointed, I'm impressed. All the more, I have a pleasant feeling that things have become "Eva-esque." The fact that this consistency is inherent [makes it] extremely valuable; I am delighted [to think] that this may be the much-discussed "live feeling." In any case, there will surely be many viewers who have the impression that, this time, Gendou's Human Instrumentality Project [somehow depends on] this "love love strategy." Fuyutsuki also says something like, "As we thought, owing to those two Unit-01 has awakened."
Tsurumaki: And Gendou replies something like "A little while longer, and our project is complete." I had doubts storyboarding that conversation, and sent Anno-san a series of questions about it. "So Gendou knew this would happen to Unit-01? Or was Gendou also surprised and troubled? Or was Gendou surprised, but pleased with the outcome?" I didn't understand the specific meaning of the statement, so I struggled to interpret it. Anno-san replied that, "For now, we'll say he aimed at this and things went the way he expected." I wondered if that was enough. For myself, I am still skeptical that even Gendou isn't really panicking inside, but...
>So [everything] will probably be overturned again next time?
Tsurumaki: That is perfectly likely (laughs).

>One more thing: Kaworu's existence in light of the fact that we are given this strong impression that, "this time, the human instrumentality project was this 'love love strategy' with Shinji and Rei." There's no doubt that female fans were extremely pleased by Kaworu's line after the ending: "Ikari Shinji-kun, this time, I will make you happy."
Tsurumaki: Kaworu's line stayed the same from the very first storyboard. It was something he said while wearing his usual relaxed smile. Of course, at the last minute, just, I think, before we started postsynchronization, we began talking about whether or not it would be better if Kaworu looked scary during that scene.
>As a result, it looks like he's come to take his bride by force!
Tsurumaki: Right, right (laughing). [We thought it would be] more interesting if Kaworu looked like [he was thinking]: "You've been with a woman while I've been away? How dare you...!" It's not Kaworu's usual relaxed expression; he's somehow become irritated, right?

Some things to note:
- This interview was readily available shortly after 2.22's DVD/BD release in Japan, meaning it was probably well before Q got a story overhaul.
- The "love love strategy" they are referring to is the Japanese basic translation of Gendo's line to Fuyutsuki in 1.0: "Next I'll have him get closer to Rei."
- They wanted the original ending of Rei's death in 2.0 so that 3.0 would have less problems and they ended up compromising on the end of 2.0.
- They adjust the movie they're working on and "force" the story to fit into what was established in the previous film(s). They're making sure nothing is retconned (which makes everything we know about Q all the more bizarre).
- With this compromise on Rei's fate at the end of 2.0, 3.0 was still wildly different from anything else before and is only not even more different because Rei """kind of""" survived and is in an awkward middle-state. They wanted 3.0 to be a very prolonged version of episode 24, and even though they got what they wanted, it apparently wasn't entirely what they were aiming for solely because of 2.0's ending involving Rei.

No and yes.

A large portion of Shinji's emotional/mental well being in Q stemmed from the idea that he did indeed save Rei at the end of 2.0 and was the driving factor in several key decisions he made in the movie. Had that not occurred and Shinji knew beyond reasonable doubt that she dies, two different stories would've came out of that:

1. Everything else plays out the same (since it was revealed that the time-skip was supposedly planned all along) and now we have a Shinji with much less reason to take certain actions, I can't see how Khara could continue the story from this perspective since Shinji's belief that he saved Rei was the sole reason for leaving WILLE.
2. The movie largely remains unchanged with the exception that Shinji is introduced to the Rei we see in Q (Rei Q) and believes he might have saved her at the end of 2.0 (not realizing Rei II did indeed die at the end). The movie would've been just the same but bogged down by Shinji learning more about Rei Q and is forced into awkward times whereas the information on Rei Shinji is given in the current iteration flows more naturally from scene to scene.

Keep in mind, the entire internal debate Khara had over the matter of Rei's fate at the end of 2.0 stems from a single line of dialogue spoken between Gendo & Fuyutsuki in 1.11 that wasn't intended to be more than just a repeated line from NGE.

This litteraly only make it worse

I just realized something.

I already knew that Shinji playing Shogi with Professor Fuyutsuki in 3.0 was already symbolic of Shinji's current predicament. Shogi isn't about destroying enemy pieces but instead recruiting them over to your side. With Shinji's actions, he lost his most valuable piece to his father. I originally thought this was some deep meaning with Kaworu coming back against Shinji in 3.0+1.0 siding with Gendo; however that seems unlikely and the answer is much simpler.

Kaworu mentions that he fell into a trap with Shinji set by Gendo when Eva-13 begins to awaken. Shinji did indeed lose his most valuable piece (Kaworu) to Gendo; but what more than likely happened is that Gendo fed false information on the spears to Kaworu who fed the same info to Shinji. In essence, Gendo made a play against Shinji himself using Kaworu as a proxy, causing Shinji to make an incorrect decision (grabbing the spears). Shinji ends up losing the game to his father because Gendo already played Kaworu like a fiddle.

I want you all to imagine with me for a moment,

You're a simple small Japanese family. You're sitting down watching some funny game show in your typical Tokyo home. The wife is on her way back from work, you and your five year-old daughter have just finished prepping the table for dinner, everything is quiet and peaceful. The commercial breaks begins to start and the two of you wonder what sort of paid advertisement is about to show that helped sponsor "Who can eat the most broccoli pizzas without vomiting?" and you're immediately greeted with this:

YouTube

Your daughter now has a phobia for Japanese Animation; your wife opens the door and immediately assumes you two were being stabbed by an intruder; you're unsure if you're even capable of comprehending what it is you've just watched. There's only one guaranteed fact that runs through your mind,

You must thank Hideaki Anno for the beautiful work of art.

Verb, CMD, I'm sure you guys will like this.

When I got home from work yesterday I was greeted with yet another box from CDJapan. I'll cut through the unboxing bullshit and go straight to the meaty details. It's the Archives Of Evangelion DVD Broadcast boxset.

Spoiler

Some comparison images with the Blu-ray Box:

Spoiler

These boxes track dust and fingerprints like fucking crazy though. Also, I've had the Blu-ray box for five years now and I've always been anally careful with it yet it still ends up with damaged edges so I have no idea how the Archives box is going to fair. So what's in Archives?

Archives is a Japanese Region 2 DVD box that contains all 26 episodes of NGE in their original unaltered form exactly as they were broadcast on Japanese TV 25 years ago. All other home releases of NGE were altered to some extent including VHS, Laserdisc, and first release DVD. For example, all home video releases of NGE contain a thirty second next time preview for the next episode, but the Broadcast versions in these set contain the original fifteen second preview. Here's some footage:

Spoiler

To further prove this is the original unaltered cuts. These episodes also have the "This episode is brought to you in part by...." cut at the beginning and end of every episode after the opening and ending.

Lastly, this boxset contains the second version of the first movie Death & Rebirth with the first half called Death (True). If anyone is aware of the release history for both D&R and EoE, they would know they have a very convoluted UNIQUE history. The first half of the first movie Death has three different versions of it. The original theatrical cut was released on DVD in Japan, the second iteration Death (True) is only available in this boxset as it was only broadcast on Japanese TV channel WOWOW back in 1998, there's no other way to get this version of Death; the third version titled Death (True)^2 is widely available in different releases and is the version used for the US release.

Because this was a widescreen movie that was released on Japanese TVs that were still the 4:3 aspect ratio, the movie unfortunately comes out both letter and pillar boxed:

All in all I'd argue that this boxset is just as cool as the Blu-ray box, however because they were never broadcast on TV it doesn't contain the director's cut of episodes 21-24 or End of Eva.

Evangelion Q Storyboard book. There's not really anything in here that sheds some light on things we're still in the dark about. But there are some neat small things that were altered/cut from the final release. About 30-45 seconds of cuts were removed from the Wundar vs. The Nemesis Series battle. Pictured below is the original take of the background behind Professor Fuyutsuki when playing Shogi with Shinji, the Rei heads were originally just gonna float and smile at the viewer. The only real substantial change was there was a roughly 3-second cut at the very end of the film that was removed showing Rei pick up the dropped SDAT before walking with Shinji & Asuka.

Spoiler

Q is divided into three and a half parts. The space sequence is the half-part and is called Avant like the Paris sequence in 3.0+1.0. There is an entire section of the story (Part D) that never made it into the film but it isn't provided in this book; we'll probably only be able to see it whenever we get a 3.0 CRC (which wont happen until after the last film releases according to Anno).

EDIT: With 1033 cuts in the film, only 76 were removed/altered.

Pretty late but I forgot I made this into a general. New info possibly coming October 4th for the 25th Anniversary of the series, along with a new promo image:

The AVANT preview for 3.0+1.0 is now available on the official app but it's still not officially translated and it's not even an HD rip of the preview, it's just a recording of the screen from the various venues it played at.

Also, I've been playing around with Filmora9, and made my own fan-promo reel of 3.33, it's basically a glorified AMV but some opinions on it would be nice:

October 4th came and went with NO new news about the final movie other than the finale is going to be 41 minutes long.

Khara streamed Jo, Ha, and Q on Line Live and we got messages from the voice actors and Anno himself about Eva celebrating it's 25th anniversary. With that being said, even the Japanese fans are running out of patience waiting for this movie. The stream was spammed at the end with "No new trailer?!" and "Release date plz?!" in Japanese, there was a clear disappointment. The "Finally OST" that was released today (Japan time) also includes a movie ticket card for Shin Eva but there's still no information on when this movie is coming.

With Spring Song already out in theaters in Japan with Fathom Events preparing a US release next month, Anno literally has no excuse at this point. It's foolish of Khara to think that people who were going to travel to the Japan for the Olympics would watch the finale to some mecha anime series they've never seen before and they're going to straight up kill any hype left for this franchise if they continue to entertain such a stupid notion.

I went back a few months ago, but it's really just sm and Fagun talking now. Jet quit the IRC to come to here, but from his last few posts on this site, and the emails we shared before he cut contact, I feel he just gave up on having an online persona. I dunno about anyone else.

Edit: Your stuff is really cool though. I saw one of the original, unedited (JP) VHS collections two months back at Vintage Stock for $60 and I'm still hating myself for not picking it up.

Yeah, because this is the "Year For Eva" (or at least was before Anno & Khara fucked it all up) I've been hyped up and in a huge Eva mood. Picking up the various home video releases of the series in different formats has been on my bucket list for a while now and thankfully I was able to finance well enough to get the more pricey releases.

Although now with GKids announcing a US Blu-ray release of the TV series with D&R/EoE that's going to be another big set I have to plan for. After I got the Archives release, the only thing I had planned to get afterwards was a Japanese DVD release of 1.01 and a US DVD release of 1.11 but those are pretty low priority.

I've been on Foguns "pending friends' list for so long that I can kind of get why everyone thought he was an asshole. sm and I literally live less than two or three miles away from each other, and despite inviting him out for drinks or a movie, he's too much of a neckbeard to accept the offer.

He goes to the same college I do. sm just sucks.

That rendition was actually in the 3.0 OST and was used for one of Q's TV spots leading up to its theatrical release. Shiro Sagisu did a "Petite Film" dedicated to the Next Time Preview theme considering this is probably his last performance using the track.

YouTube

The film also uses some small shots of Q's missing "D-part" that might have gotten carried over into Shin, but that's all up in the air.

Anyways, this one shot is the one that's keeping me intrigued/hyped. I'm getting some serious EoE vibes from it.

Spoiler

Also my little clone can't be this cute!
