Well, it did, and then was overturned.

I attribute that to voter ignorance and tricky wording on the ballots.

A "no" vote for Prop 8 was in favor of legalizing gay marriage.
A "yes" vote was against.

It wouldn't surprise me if a good number of people voted "yes" because they wanted to legalize gay marriage.
