Too bad bench pressing has no viable means of strength IRL other than a bragging notion and aesthetics.
Something falls on you.

Benchpress it off.

WOAH SCIENCE!

LMFAO, like you would ever be in a circumstance where something falls on you WHILE you're lying prone AND it requires a fucking bench press to get it off. Give me a fucking break you tard.

ok, well when it happens your scrawny t-rex arms won't save you

Congrats man. I've been lifting for 5 months and can bench 60kg for 5 reps. I could probably do 70kg bodyweight for 1 rep, but I don't have an abundance of spotters unfortunately.

Looking forward to deadlifting 140kg soon,  hopefully I'll get one rep before new year.

Kinda puts things in perspective if I think about ants a little bit. If you're able to lift your own weight, then technically speaking you're able to lift 1x your own weight. Ants are well known for being capable of lifting 10x their own body weight. Hard to imagine myself lifting 10x my own weight.

I don't think the world's strongest human was even able to lift 10x his own weight. It gives me a bit of appreciation for the the way things naturally engineer themselves to a degree. You know, there you are, a big walking collection of "bits," all working together to make one thing we call a human being.

Whatever you expose that tangle of parts to, it adapts, slowly. Environment shapes you, and you shape your environment. And your bits and pieces respond, growing weaker or stronger. Funny.
did you know no matter how high you drop an ant from, it will never die from impact because an ants terminal velocity (Max falling speed) doesn't provide the energy it would need to kill it? Conversely if you drop a horse 1000 yards, it will literally splash on impact. Gravity is cool. Nature is cool

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
The best I could do was 25kg. Good job Cad, hopefully you'll break that pb too.

Oh, nice dude! That's a big accomplishment-

*Everybody in this thread is arguing about whether or not lifting is useful*

Will people ever just shut the fuck up and let others enjoy things? Jesus Christ. Guy makes good progress on a lift, like four guys hijack the thread and bitch about "Muh practical applications." It's lifting, you do it to get stronger, clear your head, and feel confident. Stop whining.

When will you ever need to bench press outside of bench pressing? Never

Plus, you get chest strength from pushups and other more useful exercises anyway
If you qualify "More useful exercises" as "Exercises that will promote more strength" (And what other definition could you possibly mean?), then that's just false. Bench Pressing is one of the most effective muscle-building exercises for your front delts and chest, and bodyweight push-ups will never be as efficient. Unless you put plates on your back, you'll really never be able to progressively overload on your chest to any serious degree.

It's called a weight vest, and that's all bench pressing is good for - muscle building, not muscle strength. A lot of bulk and aesthetics, not dense, practical muscle.

And please explain to me what "Dense, practical muscle" is, and why bench pressing does not build it.

Really, I'm curious.

Yes I do, you're just upset that bench pressing is just a meathead activity.

Heavy weights with few reps adds bulk. Higher reps with heavy weights leans out muscle. All bench pressing really does is "puff" out your muscles. When are you practically EVER going to need to bench press? Never.

Exercising without weights gives you more compact, dense muscle that can be used more practically in an every day setting. This is a fact.

Heavy weights with few reps adds bulk. Higher reps with heavy weights leans out muscle.

You've got that backwards. Many light reps increases mass but doesn't result in much higher strength (hence why pushups are a very poor strength workout).

There is more to it than that.  Achieving great results requires commitment and consistency.  Setting goals and achieving them consistently, not making excuses.

Also forgot building mental strength and perserverance.  Most people give up when things get hard, but constantly pushing through hard workouts builts up a resistance to that urge to give up.

I used to lift, but college doesn't lend me enough free time anymore.

I only did it to prove the point that lifting is pointless anyway.
That is, if you're not interested in the way society thinks you should look. Which, you shouldn't be.
I am interested in improving my body for society's tastes, because I am a part of society, and I find muscles aesthetic.

It's not me vs them, it's me empowered/confirmed/backed up by them.

Really though? This is coming from you? You're straight, and you've written about how you would be uncomfortable with a man sucking your dick, but not a woman. You then blamed it on biology, yet now you don't think muscles - which are a good sign of a healthy person - are good looking?
Muscles add to aesthetics, and if you don't want to be the best that you can be, then you're lazy.

muh confidence is based on how striated muh muscles are
My confidence was based on whether or not I felt comfortable in my own body. I saw myself in videos and pictures, and wasn't particularly happy. Regardless of whether not you believe that it's necessary to feel proud of your body to be pleased with yourself, it is for many people. And is there honestly a problem with that? What promotes a sense of pride varies on a person-to-person basis. If muscle building and/or aesthetic goals are your priority, and they help you become a happier, healthier, and more confident individual, what's the problem? Exercise requires consistent dedication, discipline, effort, and patience. All of those are noble things to have under your belt.

Resistance training is therapeutic to many people, including myself. I feel no better sense of accomplishment and satisfaction after a long day's work than finishing my workout at the gym, showering, and eating a good meal. It's been proven to significantly support stress relief, and even mitigate symptoms of depression. Weight training isn't for everybody, because not everyone aims to get huge muscles. But for those of us that get enjoyment out of it, why are you so damn pretentious towards the concept?
