Thoughts on "To Pimp a Butterfly" by Kendrick Lamar?

This album has been widely loved across the board.

Personally, I think it's terrible. That being said, I don't like Kendrick Lamar. To me it's way to much of a political message. It's hardly music.

The only song, and all be it it's an absolutely fantastic song, that I like is "Alright".

Still doesn't come close to Under Pressure or 2014 Forrest Hills Drive in my opinion. Not even remotely close.

I like the way Kendrick can incorporate messages in his music without it sounding too dull and bland it's what I liked most about GKMC. However I'm not liking To pimp a butterfly much either, I need to listen to it a couple more times maybe.

It's all his rejects on a mixtape. And he's selling it, a mixtape, as an album for the reason you said.
That's pisses me off.

Jungle is very good though

It sounds like your main reason for disliking it is for Kendrick's political messages in his songs. That's kind of a stupid reason.

It's just it's more message then music. I don't listen to music for politics.

But it's just I don't like the style he took, the direction is so sporadic and unorganized. It just feels, odd. I also am not a fan of his voice.

If I seperate the lyrics and read them, then I see why it's highly praised, but as a musical piece I just don't see it

It sounds like you came into listening to it already not liking Kendrick Lamar so I don't know if you just expected this one album to completely change your opinion about the guy. If you don't like him then you don't like him.

I went in expecting to be blown away after all the high ratings. I was excited lol

GKMC is a much more traditional hip hop album, TPAB is an experimental concept album that mixes a TON of different styles. not really fair to compare them methinks

GKMC for sure, it sets up the "story" nicely. you wont get as much out of TPAB if you havent pored through GKMC
