Don't play semantics. "Things happen for a reason" refers to some overlooming purpose to our actions, not just cause and effect.

I mean...I've always heard it used in that sense. "Oh, you lost your job? Well don't worry man, things happen for a reason." It implies that you were meant to make that failure, somehow.

I'm surprised you've never heard it that way.

Things happen because other things happened, it's all a line of progress. If it's all leading up to one great 'plan'? No, I don't think it is.
