The UN favours Argentina over the UK on the Falkland Islands

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
From the Independent
Quote
A United Nationsโ€™ committee approved a new resolution calling on the UK and Argentina to negotiate a solution to their dispute over the Falkland Islands, essentially favouring Argentina's stance in the long-running feud.

The 24-nation Decolonization Committee passed the resolution by consensus despite passionate speeches from two Falkland Islands representatives who said most islanders wanted to keep things as they are.

The decision showed that the committee members have been largely unmoved by a referendum in the Falkland Islands last year in which more than 99 per cent of voters favoured remaining a British Overseas Territory.

The UK has rebuffed Argentina's calls to negotiate the sovereignty of the south Atlantic islands, saying it is up to people who live there to decide.

Argentinian Foreign Minister Hector Timerman attacked the UK for ignoring dozens of UN resolutions urging the two countries to talk.

โ€œIt is imperative that the United Kingdom sits down again at the negotiating table,โ€ Mr Timerman said.

The UK asserted control of the islands by placing a naval garrison there in 1833, but Argentina claims Britain stole the territory.

The Falkland Islands Government is a direct democracy and largely self-governing, although the UK handles its defence and foreign affairs. Excluding the British military and civilian contractors, the territory has a population of about 2,563 people, according to a 2012 census.

Argentina argues that the Falkland Islands dispute is a matter of โ€œsovereigntyโ€, while the UK prefers to refer to โ€œself-determinationโ€ by the people.

Mr Timerman pressed Argentina's claims that islanders are an โ€œimplantedโ€ population, kept stagnant with strict immigration policies for the purpose of occupying territory that does not belong to them.

Roger Edwards, a member of the Falklands Islands Legislative Assembly, said such claims were false. He said he and many other islanders come from families who have been there for generations and โ€œhave a strong wish to be master of our own affairsโ€.

โ€œWe are confident in our future,โ€ he said. โ€œThe only inhibition to our development is the continuing spiteful aggression of our people by Argentina.โ€

The British Mission to the UN criticized the committee for ignoring the outcome of last year's referendum.

โ€œIt is disappointing that once again the C24 [the Decolonization Committee] has not respected the clear and democratic expression of the Falkland Islanders' wishes and continues to describe the Falkland Islands' constitutional relationship with the UK as a โ€˜colonial situation,โ€™โ€ the mission said.

Fucking Argies.

I hate the fucking UN. They have no authority to force any country to do anything, yet they keep getting involved in shit that's not their business.

Maybe if the UK didn't deport everyone who opposed them and then heavily restrict immigration to prevent them or their families from returning their claims would be legitimate.

To be honest I really couldn't care less about what happens to that place though.

That's what countries agree to when they join the United Nations

That really doesn't matter. No foreign establishment can interfere with a country's sovereign decisions. UK has no obligation whatsoever to make contact with Argentina.

That was a retarded decision, but it still doesn't matter.

Really? Half the problems and conflicts in the world happened after 1945?

Current problems.

Apparently, that basic implication wasn't basic enough.

Back when this whole Falklands thing first started I went to wikipedia to get a general overview of what went had been going on down there. In it there was a section about how people who opposed British rule had been sent to Argentina with a few links to interviews with Argentinians about how their grandparents and great grandparents were deported for their opposition to the British Empire like 100 years ago.

Unfortunately it seems some British activists or the Government itself has gone and scrubbed that section in an attempt to sway public opinion (which wouldn't be surprising since corporations, governments, and activists are doing that kind of shit all the time) and to be honest I really can't be assed to dig for 4 year old sources that relate to something I couldn't give a rats ass about.

They did have a referendum just last year in which 99pc of the population voted in favour of remaining with the United Kingdom. Whether what you claim is true or not, it really is immaterial.
