That's a lot more practical than the cross guard that cuts your hands off if you brush against it.

The crossguard isn't necessary.  Lightsabers don't work like regular swords (well, that's obvious, but...).  When one saber clashes with another it doesn't slide down the blade toward the hilt, it just sticks.  Watch any lightsaber duel and you'll see what I'm talking about.
