The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
Blank / white glasses trope.
Gendo is the one who popularized it

yeah, a fair few of eva's tropes are 100% fine, because it was the first to do/was the codifier of a lot of those things

cliches are cliches, but i can't really begrudge the originator of them

most of your nitpicks so far haven't been completely invalid though

as someone who generally dislikes mecha designs wholesale, i actually really like the design of the evas

fair takeaways, but i have a few points to argue with

you described misato as "toxic"—could you qualify that a bit? because we're definitely not on the same page there

in re "predatory," if you're referring to the scene where she's on the phone with ritsuko, talking about whether it's appropriate for her to be shinji's guardian, and misato's like, "what's wrong? it's not like i'll be putting the moves on him," surely you noticed that ritsuko was audibly disgusted by the mere suggestion, explicitly responding with something like, "why would you even say that?"

in other words, she reacts the same way that the audience (probably) would to that off-color joke

although you've correctly observed one of misato's character traits (she's a flirt with no filter), you cannot argue that the show is "normalizing" this behavior when you've already seen people in-universe chastising her for it—it's fair to dislike misato as a character for these reasons, and whether she really was just joking or not is up for you to interpret—but your language and reaction just come across to me as a little bit dramatic

in re "abusive," i couldn't even guess as to what you might be referring to there

Is it because she has Shinji do all the chores? They played rock-paper-scissors for that, and it's not like kids doing chores can be construed as a form of abuse. That's silly. Is it because of that one line where she questions his manhood after she gets annoyed by how constantly he responds to her every statement with a robotic "yes"? Sure, I guess you could say it was a little mean and uncalled for, but she's also just trying to tease him out of being so damn shy. Exchanges like these are typical between introverts and extroverts, or people who don't understand each other. You can say it's meaningless, but the point of these scenes (obviously) is to let us observe how their personalities clash, which will naturally set the groundwork for every future interaction to come. Pretty basic stuff. I'm not sure what you're so hung up about. It's not like Misato never says or does anything kind or supportive.

Shinji is anything but apathetic—on top of his introverted and meek personality, he's also lost, scared, and confused after having been very suddenly pulled into something impossibly larger than him, and he's struggling to cope with it. Misato serves as a foil to help highlight these traits, too, making them particularly hard to miss. Again, you don't have to like anybody, but I do find your character descriptions to be quite off-base so far. It's still early, though, so there's still plenty of time to flesh these characters out. Just be careful not to conflate negative character traits with narrative flaws. Everyone has a reason for being the way they are.

don't worry about pen-pen—he really doesn't show up that often at all, and every time he does, he goes away in like 10 seconds

the fight with sachiel is the least interesting part of the episode, which is why it's shown last (though you did make some good observations during this part)

Maybe I should come up with an actual scale or something. Like:

4/10 = "the show is bad, but it was somewhat tolerable and while I didn't have a good time, I can stand watching it"

7/10 = "I actually enjoyed watching this, this anime is actually what I would consider good"

9/10 = "would recommend to others and actually admit I watched it"

Something like that, you know?
i'd say it's a good idea to explain what each number means to you, yeah

provides a bit of clarity, and allows you to be consistent with how you rank things

That's pretty toxic stuff if this were to happen in real life, and I fail to see how it's anything other than that.
that would be because it is, indeed, not real life

you definitely wouldn't be wrong if it was, but i'm sure you can acknowledge that scenes like this aren't meant to be taken seriously, and therefore shouldn't be, right?

i think the fact that we're working with a fictional cartoon world here kind of inherently gives it the license to exaggerate certain aspects of daily life that we take for granted and pull stuff like this every once in a while for the sake of comedy

because the part of you that's right about what you're saying is also the part that's supposed to find it funny, because that's the joke—i think you'd have to be a wet blanket like shinji to not understand that

humor is obviously very subjective, but this type of thing is common across all cartoons, even western ones you've enjoyed, such as MLP, so if this is the logic you're going to run with, i hope you apply it across the board

as a point of curiosity, what exactly do you find funny? monty python, maybe? because i genuinely don't think i've ever seen you react positively to anything that was trying to be funny in any way

it's worth reinforcing that flee should NOT click any of these spoiler tags, and that if you're going to post something in a spoiler tag, make sure it's an actual spoiler so it's not confusing

Spoiler
true, and that's how i interpret those scenes too, but

TECHNICALLY

they're still up for interpretation + misato and shinji have been through a fuckload of shit by that point

i think there's a tragic irony to how that innocent joke at the beginning ends up becoming reality down the line, just because it shows you how mentally broken the characters have become

an irony that i hope isn't completely lost on flee, if he ever makes it to that point in the show

EVA EPISODE 3:

So many pan shots over still images. Gets beat up by bully whose seemingly nice friend just stands by and smiles as if it's common. No one questions why a child is the pilot of humanity's only real defense. Literal 0/10 monster design. Kid finally showing some emotion is good. The tiny little knife as the ultimate attack was honestly just laughable. Start of bully redemption arc was okay. Monster fight was uninspired.

3.5/10, was waiting for it to end and am losing interest.
unless you're an infant who needs constant shiny objects to be flashed around in order to be entertained, there's nothing wrong with panning shots over still images—it puts more emphasis on the dialogue, which is a nice and economic way of letting you know that what's being said is important (this episode in particular brings up the hedgehog's dilemma to explain shinji's fear and social anxiety in a way that the audience can relate to, which invariably makes him a more sympathetic character)

if the dialogue doesn't seem important, then the shots probably serve to give the audience a chance to reflect a bit on what's happening (either in the grander scheme, or in the characters' minds), while simultaneously providing an establishing shot for what's about to happen next

i guess that bully's "seemingly nice friend" isn't so nice after all, then, is he? it's not completely unnatural for somebody (especially a kid) to take the side of close friends during physical conflict, even if they're in the wrong—so once again, you're doing that thing where you mistake a character flaw for a narrative flaw, which basically means that you're running out of things to arbitrarily criticize, and are just grasping at straws

it doesn't even count as a nitpick if it's just wrong

while how the public feels about children being eva pilots (and whether they know at all) is left ambiguous, you cannot definitively say that "no one questions" it—once it eventually comes to light, and knowledge starts spreading, adults in the general public may very well start questioning or even protesting this in the background, but the reason we're not shown these moments is because it's ultimately unimportant, since there's nothing anyone can do about it anyway, and it would just dilute the plot with a bunch of uninteresting crap that you're only pretending to care about

i don't see anything wrong with shamshel's design—it's not one of my favorites, but i think it's perfectly fine

you're right about the eva's progressive knife, though—for an "ultimate attack," it does seem pretty underwhelming, which i too thought was kind of weird

my interpretation is that, when shinji was being asked about it in class, he just got nervous and threw something out there—it's not like he knows all of the eva's capabilities, but since he was getting pestered by everyone about it, he didn't want to leave them hanging—but i do agree that the knife could've been made significantly larger, or at least cooler-looking

that said, the fight scenes have virtually nothing to do with the show's overall appeal to me, so i don't really give a fuck either way

pretty disappointing "analysis"—despite acknowledging a couple of positives, you've given the episode a 3.5/10 for nothing but the most vapid and insubstantial observations, ill-conceived complaints and criticism, meaningless nitpicks, and no substantive commentary whatsoever

you can't even articulate your thoughts very well, which is just embarrassing and, again, proves that you're reaching

i was genuinely hoping that you'd be able to find legitimate reasons to dislike this show, if only to give me something to chew on, and even though it was clear from the outset that you weren't actually trying, this was still just kind of pathetic

i'm not sure what i expected from this thread, really—i thought it had some potential, but at this point, it's quite obvious to me that you are NOT equipped for this sort of thing (and that goes for all media)

maybe i should take over for you

you also didn't answer my question about what you find funny earlier, so i'm going to assume that there is no answer, and that you really do just have no sense of humor whatsoever

which is fine, having a sense of humor is overrated anyway

but it does make it a lot easier for me to summarily discard anything you have to say about comedy

No need to get all salty because I don't enjoy your favorite anime. We don't all have as much free time (or care) to spend writing down detailed reviews of cartoons or games. Seems pretty obvious that much of these snide remarks still stem from me calling you out over your stupid comments in that Serious thread. Get over yourself my man.
i'm not even asking for detail, i'm asking for coherent points and meaningful observations

all you're doing is quibbling over nonsense, so maybe you should change the thread's title to reflect that

if your biggest complaint about a show is the size of a knife, i think you have more free time than you're letting on

No Game No Life did it and capitalized on it. By capitalize on it, I mean that main characters openly stated that makes their show safe to watch for everyone in that episode they done it.
