With the end of the year around the corner, and all big releases (both actual and assumed) having been released, I wanted to look back at what I saw theatrically and how I felt about how they performed and why. And I would like to see what you all felt about these same movies. Unfortunately I never got to see either Barbie or Oppenheimer but I'm glad they both performed successfully and that the year in whole wasn't made up of just laughing stock financial flops. I'm most certainly enjoying The Marvels falling flat on its face.

I will say though that my views on some of the films I saw may have been more softer than I normally would have been considering I went with my GF to see them and she loved them. Either that or I have become less scornful overall but I doubt that is the case.

Godzilla Minus One: I hate to say it, but Yamazaki made a far more compelling and visually impressive film than Anno did with Shin. The character story felt like it complimented Godzilla well instead of just butting heads with Goji like the Legendary films tend to do. With its miniscule budget and performing well financially, this was a huge wake up call to the West with their money-laundering levels of wasteful spending.  10/10

Wish: This movie was bad. Not incredibly bad, or massively bad, just generically bad which I think is worse. The art style was absolutely beautiful...and that's about all I can really say it had going for it. The little Easter Egg references were nice I guess, but I felt they were more put in by committee demand than put in for genuine artistic expression (and on that note, Doc is a really obvious and out of place director self-insert) and it kind of taints the whole point. For a movie that's supposed to celebrate the company's 100th, this is embarrassing. 2/10

Elemental: Ironically, Elemental was a far more sincere and enjoyable film despite it initially being advertised to me as generic Pixar slop. The social commentary and themes actually felt genuine and despite constantly looming over the runtime, it didn't detract from the comedy or other light-hearted moments in the story. It wasn't very visually impressive though and it was kind of generic, but at least it felt like what I said before: sincere/genuine. 8/10

The Little Mermaid: I didn't have an interest in going to see it and I was basically dragged to the theaters because I dragged her to the next movie. I don't care enough about it to review. ?/10 (probably very low)

Shin Kamen Rider: Tokusatsu Kino. I want to give this movie a perfect 10/10 but it suffers from Anno's usual problem of live-action with awkward shots/angles. His style works very well in Anime but it transfers very poorly to live-action. He somehow made it work with Shin Godzilla and it "kind of" worked here, but there were still scenes and entire sequences that suffered cause of it. 9/10

Shin Ultraman: Another movie I wanted to give a perfect score to, but surprisingly this one suffers even more from Anno-syndrome despite not even being directed by him. The entire pacing of the movie is awkward jarring and the movie straight up feels like its ending twice before the actual climax. The story was good, but it feels rushed and that along with the quirky directing choices, I struggled to get behind it. 7/10 (but it should realistically be 6/10)

the Haunted Mansion: I completely forgot this movie existed and that I went to go see it. It definitely felt more genuine to the ride than Eddie Murphy's version, I feel both are trying to accomplish different things with the 2023 version trying to be more faithful while the original trying to be a better film (which I think it is), the story for this one just felt kind of lost until halfway through when the Hatbox Ghost is revealed. But the fact that I straight up forgot I even saw the movie doesn't bode well for how others might feel about the movie. 6/10

The Super Mario Bros. Movie: I know there was a lot of back and forth about this movie leading up to its release. And as someone who has a pretty negative bias towards Nintendo (I just bought an OLED Switch a month ago) I must admit this was a pretty enjoyable movie. The story was simple/generic but not eye-rolling which might seem like a subpar thing to say but I do realize this is a movie for kids first and foremost; the visuals were surprisingly really good, and the performance from the actors were top notch. I don't want to call this movie perfect, I know its a kid's movie but there isn't much for adults to latch onto unless your one of those Gen X Nintendrones who don't believe other video game companies outside of Nintendo exists. But I just can't find anything truly bad yo say about it. 9/10

How was the year for you all at the movies?

Sound of Freedom was p gud.

Across the Spiderverse was p gud.

I think I got dragged out to an MCU movie this year at some point but I don't even remember what it was.  Did the Ant-Man one come out this year or last year?

The new Indiana Jones had potential but the new character Helena was obnoxious.  The premise was a great one for an Indy adventure though and where it winds up going is a fun time.  Some stuff could've been cut though like one of the seven or so chase sequences.

I think the new Evil Dead came out this year?  It was cool, kinda like the 2013 one which was great.  Hard to mess up Evil Dead.

The only thing I saw in theaters was that one Marvel movie.  Getting to watch basically new movies at home now is dank.  Theaters suck ass.

Oppenheimer and TOP GUN were movies I was proud to go see in theatres.

If you read more into his life his went into a coma during the sixties.  He went out thinking the world was ending.

In regard to the box office, it definitely feels like nature is healing to some extent. It's good to see studios getting punished for how uninspired/lazy they've become. Coasting off of beloved IP is basically the one trick studios like Disney have any more. It'll be interesting to see if they can course correct or if the bubble is truly popped.

Believe it or not the following are all the movies I saw in the theater this year (not counting any from streaming or rental). May be forgetting a few, but there’s already too many as is.

Godzilla Minus One: Never got around to watching Shin Godzilla (seemed weird to me), so I really appreciated a grounded Godzilla story, closer to the original. The WWII setting was a nice touch to retain the allegory. Wasn’t quite a slam dunk for me. I feel like I have trouble with Japanese media, such as anime. Some of the overacting got a bit goofy, especially with people in the audience laughing. 7/10

Napoleon: I probably will need to see this one again, if I ever feel like it, to fully articulate my thoughts. The movie falls into the trap of a lot of biographical films, where it just feels like a highlight reel without much of a compelling narrative. I’ve also heard that it’s not very historically accurate, so I didn’t get much out of this film. The choice to make the overall plot largely around his relationship with Josephine seemed strange to me. 6/10

The Marvels: I didn’t really have a problem with this film, compared to half the content Marvel has been hemorrhaging out lately. I thought the entanglement element was fun, but they lost the plot a bit in the second half. I’m also tired of the over-reliance on macguffins. Not sure anybody cares but I’ll avoid spoilers. Wasn’t surprised to see this one bomb. 5.5/10

Killers of the Flower Moon: Tried to go into this one blind, so I was caught off-guard with how depressing it was. We caught a pretty late showing and I was nodding through the last hour. Would like to see it again before rating.

The Creator: Solid, original sci-fi. 7/10

Talk to Me: Didn’t particularly scare me, but really enjoyed it. 8/10

Oppenheimer: Nolan at his best. I’ve seen it twice, and think I enjoyed it more the second time. 10/10

Barbie: Think I mentioned this in another thread, but when we left the theater my roommates were ludicrously upset with this film, and that may have skewed my perception a bit. Still thought it was well-made, but I didn’t get much out of it, and not sure if I’d see it again. 6.5/10

Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One: I didn’t like how they chose to [redacted] and basically replace them with [redacted]. Other than that, the movie still felt like a step down from previous entries, which is still pretty good. 6/10

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: The gonzo ending is the only thing giving this film merit. 5/10

The Flash: I was thoroughly enjoying the movie until they introduce the annoying ass Barry. Movie has other problems that I’m sure everyone is already aware of. 6/10

Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse: Good movie, but kind of overshadowed by the original for me. Also not crazy about all the “tune in next time”, cliffhanger endings. 7/10

Fast X: Barely remember what happens but I remember not liking it. Do remember it having the worst cliffhanger ending on this list. 4/10

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: I’d like to see this one again, because I liked it, but not as much as everyone else seemed to. 7/10

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: This hit the mark, mainly due to the cast, but was kind of bland/forgettable otherwise. 6/10

John Wick: Chapter 4: Never felt like this series was “my thing”, but maybe I was just in the right mindset for this one. Some of the action scenes could really drag, but overall I think it’s my favorite entry. Hope they end it here. 7.5/10

Creed III: I’m a sucker for fighting movies, so this score may be inflated. Better than the last one, but not as good as the first Creed. Jonathan Majors elevates it a bit. 7/10

Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: Contender for the worst MCU movie. Plot was as bland as it gets for one of these. Every actor, aside from Rudd and Majors, delivers their lines so flat, like they were just filmed in a room by themself surrounded by green screen. Having your new main villain get killed by Ant Man in his first movie was a wild choice. 3/10

Knock at the Cabin: There’s nothing more interesting that happens in this movie beyond what’s shown in the trailer. 4/10

Missing: I was enjoying the film but the plot got pretty convoluted/unbelievable. 6/10

M3GAN: Fun but dumb. 5/10

Mario was enjoyable, can't wait for the cross over with Sonic.

Sadly it seems I've reached that age were I'm too busy to go to the cinema.

Interesting to hear The Marvels was a flop financial wise, could this finally mean the slow but sure decline of Marvel after 23 years?

Goodness gracious, great balls of lightning!
The only movies that got me to go to the theaters this year was Oppenheimer and Godzilla Minus One. I didn't have the time to watch Barbie and I really wanted to see that one. Other than those I really didn't care about anything else that released this year.

Godzilla Minus One:

- This movie is Toho at their absolute peak. The Godzilla movies where he's the only monster wrecking havoc on Japan and the citizens usually end up being the best Godzilla movies and this one is up there. Loved all the characters and some of the dialogue I wasn't expecting to be so deep, especially the post-war Japan stuff and themes of PTSD. This film made me tear up, something a Godzilla movie hasn't done for me since Godzilla vs DESTOROYAH when Godzilla Jr and Godzilla both die in that movie. I put this movie in my top 3 Godzilla films. 10/10.

Oppenheimer:

- This movie was incredible and beautifully shot. The Atomic Era is my favorite point in US history so immediately I was hooked into this movie. I watched it in 70mm and it was glorious. Learning more about Robert Oppenheimer and the type of person he was from this film was interesting. Even though I already knew what was going to happen, I was still on the edge of my seat with my heart pounding waiting for the Trinity Test to detonate. There were a couple key personnel that worked on the Manhattan Project like Louis Slotin that were strangely left out of this movie, I wonder why. 10/10

I'm not sure if you'd like Shin Godzilla. The characters are very quirky and the actors really lean into it, but it also has some very weird cinematography and of course I remember all the comments on how "ugly" Godzilla was in it. Although it does do a great job of being an allegory for the Fukushima Disaster more than an atomic weapon, and there's a looming fear of another bomb being dropped in the story that hangs over the heads of the characters if they can't solve the mystery. I also feel the atomic breathe scene in Shin was better than it was in Minus One.

I saw The Boy and the Heron the other week.

It was very nice looking nonsense.  Was refreshing to see a traditionally animated creative movie.

Watched "The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" yesterday, fell asleep through the first ½ of the movie, that's how boring it was.

The remainder was meh, just passable enough for me to stick through until the end.

If you know, you know.
This was the most cinema year for me. The local cinema has a special offer on Tuesdays, any movie any time is half-price. So I get two tickets for the price of one.

Highlights were John Wick 4, Mario movie, Spiderman and The Creator.
The rest were watchable / alright. Like GotG and the Flash.

I got around to watching the Puss in Boots film.  Western animation has come along way.  I very much enjoyed the "Spiderman" style fight animation
