So, it's a steel drum for niggers who are too broke to even get a real steel drum?

It's more expensive than a steel drum and it has a higher quality sound. A lot more engineering went into the design of the handpan than in the steelpan. I suggest you look it up, it's quite amazing actually. The creators basically took the properties of gongs, steelpans, bells, and combined them all into one intrument. So saying a handpan is a poor man's steel drum is like saying Caviar is a poor man's sardines.

that's pretty cool, but the most discouraging thing about it isn't just making it--but knowing that you'd have to learn how to play it afterwards

I heard they're quite easy to play, though I imagine the thumbs and fingers would start to develope callouses from striking metal so much. But after firing my shell, it's amazing how much the metal resonates at the slightest touch.

Here's one guy who sells nothing but.

And once you consider the man hours it will take you, not to  mention the materials if you keep messing up, you actually might find yourself in a better position paying for one.

I believe he said he wanted one but couldn't find one in the OP.
It's more like telling someone who is trying to handwrite a book on handmade paper and bind it in leather themselves, then pass it around one person at a time until everyone they want to have read it has, to just type it up and send it to a publisher.

Interesting. I'll have to keep an eye on this guy. For now, he doesn't have any scales I desire. I'm looking for a minor scale, preferrable d-minor. Anyway, like Verbatim implied, it isn't just about acquiring a handpan. It's imparting a lot of discipline upon me and it's become sort of meditative. When I get fixated on something, I want to figure out how it works. There is an adrenaline rush I get when I work on a grueling problem and then I begin to make breakthroughs. Besides, if I am going to buy a handpan, I want to buy one in a scale I want and so far, there are waitlists for that kind of thing.

You're not supposed to be discouraged about learning new shit!

Especially if you're the one who wants to learn it in the first place!

I kid. I was a lazy fuck when I was a bit younger. Even now, "hard work" isn't something I'd get excited over, But depending on what the hard work is for, it's less of an issue.

Most of the time I don't sign up for hard work for the sake of it, or even money. I tend to get into it because I care enough to try and help somebody. Work will always be work Verb. But it's the motivations behind why you're doing it that count.

As such. I can partially agree. Hard work can be intimidating. But it doesn't have to.

To be honest, this is why I stay here. It has, and will always be the only reason. People doing interesting things. Things you don't expect. Things you can learn from. Bundles of perspectives and lives, all like little snapshots.

It's a guilty pleasure, I guess. As much as I am on the retreat from people, as much as I find myself disliking them, and as much as I don't feel like I have anything to say any longer, and yet, there you have it.

You're building a musical instrument all on your own, and you're sharing it with us, for whatever purpose you deem it for.

Thank you.
