You can get all vitamins, minerals, and protein from plant-based food with the exception of Vitamin B-12.
I mean, I'd rather take a supplement than contribute to an industry that tortures, kills, exploits animals for profit, and destroys the environment. Not to mention a vegan diet is the healthiest diet despite a lot of misinformation out there about it "lacking nutrients"

huh

now, pardon my ignorance, but where would your main sources be for lots of calories outside of sugary fruits and fermented beverages? This is actually something that's always been forefront of my mind whenever I think about vegitarian/pescitarian options just because of red meats and a family history of cholesterol and high blood pressure issues.
My daily caloric needs definitely aren't below 2000, and the last thing I need in my work is for my body to go in to starvation mode and store all kinds of fat while eating it's own muscles.

A lot of vegans make the mistake of not eating enough. A lot of them fail and turn back to meat because they think they can just eat an apple and a salad, feel full and think that's enough food to give them the nutrition they need, but it's not. They don't realize that plant foods are not as calorically dense as meat and animal products. You can get more than enough calories by eating a wide variety of foods:

Just a few examples
Carbs: Whole grains like rice and quinoa, fruits and vegetables
Protein: Soy products like Tofu, Lentils, Beans
Healthy fats: Nuts, seeds, olives, avocados, coconuts

Bread, nuts, and peanut butter can all help fortify a vegan's caloric intake. Two peanut butter sandwiches (a typical breakfast of mine) is around 400 calories by itself, which is pretty decent.

I'm no dietitian, though.

Is it common for vegans to supplement meals with protein powder? It seems to me that the lifestyle would be much easier with a few scoops of protein each day, then you just need carbs and fat which are easy. Even easier if you're pescatarian and have access to some of the healthiest foods available.

That's what my sister does, but I don't bother. I have a lot of imitation meat, which uses soy, which is protein rich. Good enough for me.

I actually fucking hate animals, in general. They're scummy and gross and vile and horrible and unintelligent creatures, generally speaking. Veganism has nothing to do with "love" for organisms. It's a desire to do no harm to them.

Are you at all concerned about estrogen levels in soy? Also, what kind of imitation meat do you eat -- is that like a veggie burger?

Soy shouldn't be a problem when consumed in moderation. I'd be cautious about drinking too much soy milk though.

Isn't moderation kind of difficult when it's your main source of protein?

Veggie burgers, chicken strips, "tofurkey," various analogue cheeses... I'm always finding new things to try out.

You have to be careful with a lot of this stuff, though, because a lot of it isn't even vegan. Just vegetarian.

Can't say I'm at all concerned about the estrogen levels of soy, though. Hasn't even crossed my mind.

it's actually not my main source. I just listed that as an example of a protein-rich food.
But like I said in my post, the key is to eat a wide variety of different foods in a vegan diet. If you do that you can get more than enough protein in your diet

No. Nuts, legumes, peanut butter, granola, etc. are all good sources of protein as well. Where a vegan's "main source" of protein comes from will largely depend on the vegan--a lot of times, it's soy, but it's not a strict rule.

They're not vegans; they're pescatarians.

I've discussed this rather recently, actually. Fish live particularly squalid and unfulfilling lives--more so than any other vertebrate I can think of. Therefore, we're probably doing them a favor by eating them, in all honesty.

They can still suffer and feel pain, of course, so we should refrain from brutally slaughtering them--but am I against putting a fish out of its misery and putting its body to good use?... No, I can't say I am. So if you eat fish, I can't really hold that against you.

Fish are miserable creatures--we don't need to torture them, but we're probably doing them a favor by ending their lives prematurely.

I won't do it, though. Whatever little taste I had in fish to begin with, I lost it a long time ago.

Youre the most hardcore vegan I know dude...

It does sound like you're fine with people eating meat, just not personally yourself, I respect that, cause a lot of vegans class meat eaters under degeneracy and try to convert yadda yadda.

But lastly I know what a primary fish eater is named, I was just talking about those that actually believe they are vegan and fish arent animals.

I assume youd just conclude to them as idiots.

Ya know, if decent seafood weren't going up in price (get yer fucking basic ass whitefish and alaskan cod the fuck out of here) I could totally live on that shit.
"but Das, go get your own"
Fuck you, liberals. Because of you hippie shits, the government tells me when I can, cannot, and how to fish. And going to Jersey to cast rods off the shore everyday would be even more expensive.

Yeah, they'd be dumb.

And I'm fine with people eating meat, insofar as they admit what they're doing is wrong. I have no intention of "converting" anyone, because the only person who can make the transition is yourself. And the first step to making the transition is recognizing that you should probably do it in the first place--and that's the path I'd like to help lead others down.

So far, it's worked with Snake, Meta, and Korra, so there's that. Though, again, I can't really take credit for those, because they were the ones who made the leap for themselves. They made the choice; I just helped light the way. But that's pretty much what I do this for.

Consider though, a lot of protein powders use animal products.

Especially those that are intended for /fit/ types to enhance their gains.
There are vegan protein powders that use pea and hemp protein.
