Hey.
I came here from b.net after a few Floods invited me. None of them post on either b.net nor here anymore, which is sad. I was still active on b.net until for some bizarre reason, b.net admins locked out people who have not played Destiny. Even if you wanted to post on the offtopic section. After that, I fully moved here and have not returned to b.net since.
Please come play Halo with me.

Interesting set of talks, but my question is - why do you have to bring up domestic politics when talking about issues of global climate? Are these just paid off shills not happy that electro cars are replacing their gas guzzlers?

If its cooling, why are the poles (allegedly) melting? We all remember that picture of the Polar bear dying of hunger because their food chain changed (supposedly) due to a shift in temperatures and cracking ice.

Thing is, these are serious people with years of experience and degrees.

They claim however that there is no link between CO2 and any changes to the climate. For example:

Pffffft, alarmist my hole.

The poles are a terrible gauge of measuring Climate Change, as they fluctuate wildly in growth and receding rates so that no discernable pattern can be made. One year they grow, the next they recede and then another year the largest chunk of iceshelf suddenly becomes an iceberg. This happened last year while I was fucking studying it for Glaciology.

But it's not iceshelves or SEA ICE that is the problem...immediately. You see, sea ice is exactly that, it already was sourced FROM the sea, so melting sea ice doesn't contribute to a rise in global sea levels (though a dramatic decrease in reflective white snow and ice and being convert into dark blue heat absorbing water would be a concern, though at that point you'd already have global warming, and would then be concerned with a runaway warming effect that is self sustaining).

Glacier retreats are what should be concerning. LAND ICE melting and returning to the oceans. Iceshelves can act as an anchor or simply a barricade to glaciers, or tied into their existence completely. When the Larson C shelf seceded to becoming A68, the glaciers behind on Antarctica's landmass increased speed, dumping more ice straight into the oceans to melt. It's estimated that when that ice is dumped, it will contribute to global sea levels by 10cm. What's worse, it's increasing speed. On the plus side, this urgency has lead to increased research projects on glaciers across the world, but only because it's predicted we won't have European glacier by the turn of the century.

And finally, this. It's locked behind a paywall so you can only see the abstract unless you've got some uni student login, but it summarised here quite excellently, particularly the chart of glacier about midway through the piece. Now why are glaciers our best study of climate change? Because we've been studying them since the 19th century, with personal accounts and general observations as far back as the late 1700's.

What bugs me more is the short sightedness of that forbes article. If I read it correctly, the Earth will experience a global cooling event - but only for a quarter of a century as the ocean cycle flips... great, we'll have 25 years of returning to slightly lower average temperatures, but nothing I doubt that will get us to pre-industrial levels and everything will be hunky-dory as we justify it to continue using our fossil fuels and ignore greener alternatives. It's fine to accept these short term cycles will affect the global temperature, but it's irrefutable that we have contributed to greenhouse emissions, and that they are linked to global warming.

I don't want to wait-n-see while the next cycle ticks over and then we get a double-dose of warm periods.

Serious people with degrees can still say and believe the dumbest stuff. Ben Carson is an accomplished neurosurgeon who truly believes that the biblical Joseph build the Egyptian pyramids by himself to store grain in. The guy in the video is a physican. That's it. He's not an expert on anything related to climate change or the environment. His arguments are misleading and cherry-picked shit, and the same goes for the article in Forbes (which is notorious for posting pseudo-scientific BS on topics that favor big corporations). This explains why.

Also, don't be so easily persuaded by fancy titles. The "ICCC" isn't the IPCC (the actual panel on climate change) even though they're clearly trying to pretend there's a connection. The "International Climate Change Convention" is nothing official and has no legitimacy. I could start my own Intergovernmental Conference for Climate Science tomorrow and it would be as real as this one. It's organized by the Heartland Institute (which, among others, also campaigns in favor of cigarettes and conducts research into how they're actually good for you) that's received millions of dollars from oil companies. Same thing goes for titles and credentials. An MD, PhD, Dr... doesn't mean anything if it's in a different field.

tl;dr everything he said is BS.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.

I used to work in a freezer where the temperature was -5 degrees and it was so cold it would burn you. 41 degrees is summer heat compared to that.

idk if people are serious or not ITT, but its no longer called global warming. Its called global climate change. Hence the changing climate you are seeing.

Some parts get warmer, some get colder. Some get more severe weather - like if town X used to get a hurricane once every five years, it now can get two or three in one year - every year.

Moscow did not have snow a few years back in winter! Only at the very end of December it got a bit snowy.
Antarctica is getting memed on and so is Greenland.
