The new EP was good. Underwhelmed on the first listen, but it did indeed get better on subsequent listens.

It's good to hear that Trent's still capable of making heavy music, albeit with a modern twist. I'd say my biggest gripe with it is the lyrics, which sadly continue to be a little on the generic side (which was HM's problem, as well). You may have noticed, but Trent has a habit of recycling the same rhyme schemes over and over again--I'm sure you've noticed that he REALLY loves the word "away," and rhyming absolutely everything with it. It's like clockwork.

That being said, the instrumental work--as always--is splendid. Crisp, layered, heavy. Slow-burning. Meditative. I was impressed to see a few lo-fi tracks thrown in the mix, as well--I've developed a huge fondness for that rough texture.

Favorite tracks: She's Gone Away, the Idea of You, and Burning Bright. Dear World, is good too--sounds like something straight out of Hesitation Marks, which is an album I think I appreciate a lot more than most NIN fans (despite the subpar lyrics).

Not outstanding, but a solid, welcome release.

Don't really disagree with anything you've said here, you're pretty much right on the money. Burning Bright is my favourite track, but they're all quite good. It's like With Teeth had a baby with Hesitation Marks. I usually don't "get" Trent's stuff until the second or third or fourth time through, so I know what you mean about subsequent listens.

Quote
]You know it. The Fragile is my all-time favorite album; I wouldn't miss an opportunity to listen to its outtakes. One Way to Get Here is fucking AMAZING and White Mask is pretty dope. If you haven't heard the album that he produced for Saul Williams, I'd check that out. A couple of instrumentals from that record actually made it onto Deviations as well--one of them being a personal favorite of mine.

I actually hadn't heard of that album. I'll check that out as soon as possible.

As for myself, I've listened to a few of the tracks off of Deviations 1, but I actually ordered the 180 gram vinyl a few weeks ago so I'm holding off until it arrives to actually sit back and listen to it. If you didn't know, I've started collecting vinyl, and I'm rebuilding my halo collection up all over again.

Quote
Overall a great experience. No other artist would've done the same thing--it's great to be a NIN fan.

Yup. No other artist would make their first release in several years an "unfriendly and fairly impenetrable" record. That's like the exact opposite of what someone else would do, lol. I'm glad you introduced me to his music when you did, because you're right - it's a great time to be a NIN fan. 2 new movie scores coming out, promised new NIN material that isn't Deviations 1 or NTAE, and he's performing live in New York this summer, which I'm hoping leads to a resurgence in interest for him to start touring again. I need to see him live at least once in my life.

Quote
Not yet, actually. Is it good?

I enjoyed it as much as you can enjoy a movie about an act of terrorism, but I only went to see it 'cuz of Trent's involvement... he has this style that really compliments filmmaking. His music isn't obnoxiously altering the mood of the film like a Zimmer or Silverstri would, it's more complimentary and it alters the perception of any given scene in a much more subtle way. I'm looking forward to dissecting it when he releases the soundtrack on its own. I would recomend you see it soon, though.

On topic however. What games have you and your friends been streaming? Is there a long term goal for the channel or are you guys just doing it for fun?
Yeah, just for fun. For now, at least. Four or five summers ago, we actually did it to help raise money for Child's Play (even managing to raise $200 one night), but we had a rigid schedule planned out, and we streamed nearly every day all summer. This got exhausting, especially because we never quite broke past 20 or so concurrent viewers, so we just kinda stopped. We figured it would be smarter to gain a substantial following before trying to get people to donate, and we decided to take a few years to mature before we start things up again.

We play random stuff, mostly. We streamed some Street Fighter matches one day, and then SpongeBob: Battle for Bikini Bottom and even the World Ends With You in the next. I wanted to introduce them to Jade Cocoon--this obscure-ish JRPG for the PS1 that I'm fond of--so I've been streaming that lately. I also have an interest in speedrunning, so I've been practicing Mario World and Pokémon Red, which were my go-to games to stream back in the day. And I have a few other ideas as well.

We don't stream as vigorously as we used to--mostly because most of us have jobs and stuff now, but weekends are always a safe bet.

Our greatest achievement was when one of our crew managed to beat SM64 in 20:51--which was actually somewhere in the top 100 speedruns for the 16-star category at the time. It's moments like that that still give me high aspirations for the project.

that's actually kind of neat. if you're comfortable with having people from here watching you should drop a link on here or on discord. i'd probably check it out if i was free

Good to have you back. What's your (or your group's) Twitch name?
We are Super Marathon Bros--so named because we marathoned Nintendo games, chiefly for the youngins.

Not so much anymore, as I explained, but we're trying our best to get back into the groove.

Hmm... I've only had the chance to listen to Superstar and Animals but Holy Wood is my next pickup probably. I assume that's what you mean by triptych.

His next album (Say10, comes out Valentine's Day, idk if you follow him at all) is apparently the most "thematic and complex thing he's ever done, mixing the best of Superstar and Animals as well as new stuff." In one of the promo vids, he alludes to slicing the throat of a man intended to be Donald Trump, so... you may be interested in that.

There's some edgy shit in there but I like his style for the most part. He's an artist that I like for the most part but I can't relate to the lyrics anymore so it's not as enjoyable as it used to be.

It's really the religious aspect that drags it down for me. I've softened my views on Christianity as a whole and I can't relate anymore.

I used to be pretty anti religion. Not quite a fedora tipper but close. Now I'm not quite as against it, I understand it has its uses and that some people are better for it.
