They aren't exactly looked kindly upon.

Are you just not understanding what I'm saying? This has nothing to do with the shooter who killed himself. As you said, he's gone. This has everything to do with the social environment we're cultivating in America. Do you think that when this asshole set out to do what he did, he was just oblivious to the inevitable outcome of mass media attention on it? The precedent of fame given to people like Elliot Rodger and James Holmes only encourages shooters, and the fame given to Chris Mercer this week is just encouraging it further. We need to break this cycle.

This has been going on since the media covered murderers. How exactly are we going to break the cycle? By just not telling anyone that some lunatic went on a rampage and killed a dozen people?

Exactly. And you know as well as I do that the media is a business. It sensationalizes things. Chris Mercer is already a national pariah, known by all. And yet the stories continue because people keep watching. It's a narrative that strings people along and milks advertisers as long as the story can continue. You can inform the public there was a shooting without taking it this far. And let's be honest - this is an enormous country. Terrible things happen every day. There are probably no less than 500 active serial killers in the country right now, and dozens of people get murdered on a daily basis. The only reason we blow up stories like this to the national level is that they're visceral and attention-grabbing.
