Not really a remix, but Johnny Cash's cover of hurt is better than the original.

It's hard to not redo 7 Nation and be better than the original.

Yes. Reznor's whispering annoys me.
Also, fuck the ending.

I'm going to have to disagree with the OP as well. The original hits harder and is more cohesive as a song.

Nope.
Yep
NOPE

i realize this is an uncommon opinion, so let me attempt to explain w/o over-analyzing too much

Cash's cover is excellent and almost completely gives a whole new meaning to the song, so the two are kind of difficult to compare on an emotional basis. But after careful deliberation over ten years of having listened to both songs, I really have to give it to the original Nine Inch Nails recording.

The beauty of the song itself is that the lyrics can take on different meanings, depending on how it's sung and who is singing it--but in general, it could be described as a lamentation of a past that once was and never will be again, because of the harsh vicissitudes of life, time, and fate.

Trent's original recording focused primarily on a more literal interpretation of his lyrics ("the needle tears a hole/the old familiar sting..."); mainly because he was a young addict, and whole life and career were falling apart because of it. His strained, whispered vocals evoke a sense of despair and hopelessness unlike anything I've heard before.

Johnny Cash's version, however, takes the song in a different direction. Though he, too, wasn't unfamiliar with drug-related vices, he chose to focus more on the decayed aspects of the lyrics. In his old age, Cash looks back and laments not only his past mistakes, but his inability to fix them ("I wear this crown of thorns/upon my liars chair,/full of broken thoughts/I cannot repair"). From here, all of the lyrics take on new meaning, as he delves further into the not-so-positive aspects of his life. It's like anti-nostalgia. When the beautiful music video for this cover was shot, Cash was coming towards the end of his life, and he knew it--so the shame and regret felt in his vocal performance was all the more palpable.

Instrumentally, whereas the original is stripped down, despondent, and lonesome, Cash's version takes a more grand, immediate, and emphatic approach, with powerful, tear-jerking crescendos, shook vocals where you can hear the age in his voice, and Rick Rubin's overwrought production (the one thing I don't like about the recording). It's easy to understand why anyone would prefer Cash's version, because--c'mon--he's an old guy singing about depressing shit. It's really, really hard not to like that, or feel something when you hear it.

But the reason I prefer Trent's version is simply because I like the tone better. The song sounds empty and broken. Almost incomplete--as if the song just doesn't give a fuck anymore. The guitars are distorted, slightly out of tune, and they disrupt at odd intervals--it almost sounds like the song is dying. Perhaps fittingly, because this is the last song off of The Downward Spiral, Trent's most highly-celebrated (though extraordinarily depressing) oeuvre.

Anyway, it's this quality of the song that ends up being missing in Cash's cover. It sounds almost too perfect. During the final crescendo, Rick Rubin mixes Cash's voice in such a way that it isn't drowned out by the stentorian piano-playing, so you can hear what he's singing. This is fine--I like being able to hear what people are singing, but it lacks the raw, rugged aesthetic that is present in Trent's version.

During the final verse, Trent sings, "If I could start again/a million miles way/I would keep myself..." and then, out of nowhere, an ear-splittingly loud guitar distortion shatters the quiet atmosphere, as Trent sings "I will find a way," with the noise rendering this final line almost totally inaudible in the distorted mess. This is the song's only note of optimism, and it gets blown out by this massive and almost fear-inducing ear-rape of an outro, as if Trent is doomed to cycle through his addiction for the rest of his life, giving himself a false sense of hope every time he hits bottom. Hence, you can barely hear him sing it. That shit was done on purpose, and you won't find that on Cash's version.

So yeah, that's why I like it better. The raw aesthetic of the original production is a little bit more appealing to me than Cash's operatic, almost theatrical interpretation. They're both excellent pieces of music, but I have to give Trent's the edge. It's one of those songs that gets better and better the more I listen to it.

The Kinks isn't particularly a great band, but they made a few good tunes. I enjoy this cover of it.

Some band made a full song out of a Wind Waker soundtrack and I love it.

If you want to call the metal cover of Gary Numan's "Cars" a remix. It sounds very similar, but the emphasis on the guitar adds a nice touch.

Then again --You can't really see the crowd jump to this anymore, so maybe the magic of the old one beats most remixes. But Rob's purpose of the song probably gives it more meaning anyway.
