Ghost in the Shell

Setting: Near-future Japan. In GITS, we have nearly achieved transhumanism. Technology has advanced to the point where people are able to replace their bodies with synthetic parts, and many people can afford to upload their "ghosts," or brains/souls, to powerful computers called cyberbrains (which are in your skull the same as a regular brain.)

Plot: GITS follows Public Security Section 9, a secretive Japanese govt organization which specializes in responding to cyberterrorism. The main character, Motoko Kusanagi, is a fully prosthetic human, and this plays heavily into her character development. The story focuses on Section 9's investigations into a criminal known as the Puppet Master.

Themes: GITS is incredibly visceral; as such, it deals with philosophical themes such as the Ship of Theseus.

GITS is an animated movie from 1995, and it has had a profound cultural impact. In fact, the Wachowski's cite is as the main inspiration for The Matrix. It's one of the most culturally significant works of art that has come from our era.
