I'm bored so I'm pulling stupid bits of information out of the back of my head and this one came to mind.

It's a quick thought experiment, I mean you can try the practical version but I wouldn't recommend it <.<

Materials you need (Or concepts)
-A glass of water

What to do
Part 1
-Think about the saliva in your mouth, how it constantly refills and you have to swallow it periodically as part of normal biological function.

Question: Do you find it gross? That you are swallowing saliva constantly?
Make a note of your answer, mental or written.

Part 2
-Spit into the glass
-Think about drinking the glass of water with your spit floating in it.

Question: Do you find it gross? The thought of drinking water that you just spat into?
Even if you would have normally mixed the water with saliva in your mouth as you drank it?

How do your answers compare?
And question for a commendation mark - What is this psychological process called?
[Regarding the final question, turns out I was misremembering two different paragraphs in the book. The process was unrelated to the thought experiment, it was to do with interpersonal disgust and how morally objectionable actions tend to rank more highly on the scale of disgusting acts when compared to 'oral incorporation of XYZ' <.<]

Moms spaghetti
I was in class so I took out a bottle of water I had. Once I got to part two I decided against physically doing the experiment lol.

Also I'm assuming you are supposed to find it not gross when it's in your mouth but suddenly gross once you spit in your water, which I did think. I've never heard of this before though, so interesting!

Heh, close <.<
Turns out I was actually misremembering two seperate paragraphs, I just checked the book and it was describing this thought experiment devised by Allport in '55 and then a seperate experiment done by Rozin later on which included interpersonal disgust as the concept >.>

Have you ever tried drinking water that's been diluted with spit? I did that when I was a kid. Spit into a bottle of water until the top was all foamy. I shook it up because I didn't like everything just being on the top like that, and tried taking a sip afterwards.

Not a pleasant texture or feeling when you realize you've turned your water warm with spit.

Alright, so it seems as if the worry is about sociability. Someone may be able to see you drinking a glass of your own spit, but your mouth processes are confined to you yourself. The only issue would then be how others perceive you, and not the act of drinking the spit-water itself?

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
Part One: Easy. If you want to go into details, my saliva only digusts me when I have a cold (when it's...gobbier, euch)

Part Two: Eurgh. When saliva's in my mouth I can do little about it. But water is "fresh" until I spit in it, because I can get new water.

On a side note, I wouldn't have minded so much if I'd just licked the water. Strange how the mind works.

I just noticed I mispelled separate twice in a row, brb committing sudoku.

And I don't think that was the thinking behind the experiment, it was explained as being more to do with how we are disgusted by things that have been 'contaminated' as a general reflex to avoid disease IIRC. So when someone is vomiting, bleeding, weeping, oozing god knows what all over the floor - the reaction is to move away from it rather than to start rolling around in it <.<

ive thought about something similar before. Like people will make out and stick your toungue in other people mouths, yet if that same person spit on your food or in your drink you would be upset

Oh, alright. The word "interpersonal" got me thinking about what changes behavioral differences between isolated individuals and those in a group.

Indeed <.<
It's what threw me off a little in Ekman's book, because the two paragraphs kind of just blended together a bit too much <.<

1. No

2. Slightly, but it wouldn't bother me to much to drink it.

Bad sources, and not relating to the topic :\
I can't remember how I got to those pages, or how I failed to realize it related to Wiccan concepts.

Well, there's a parallel to this in Wicca apparently.

Are we talking about the emotion of "core disgust" on some level?

Shite, I have to commute. I'll get back to this and edit this post.
I've already spent time researching it, might as well finish the fight.

Is it an application of the "Core Disgust" emotion?

Spoiler
Not really, it's a thing my body does and I can't exactly stop it.
I'm used to it so I don't find it repulsive.

I do think it's a bit disgusting, mainly because saliva is supposed to be inside your mouth. I don't know the science behind it, but there's a reason it's there.
Once outside of the mouth however, it's not a nice thing.
However, the fact it is my own saliva means I can drink it when mixed with drinking water.
