What's your experience with Dungeons and Dragons?

Have you DM'd games?

Played many characters?

I'm curious now, I did a little bit of D&D with a huge amount of loose room to work with(as in cutting a lot of the complicated shit.)
Played 2 characters before leaving the group. I would love to do another game like that, but I probably have a lot to learn.

So, are you a nerd like me?

I've done a homebrew game with some friends a few times.
I've never DMed, but I've played as a few different flavors of wizard.

Wizard and magic alltogether really was a thing I avoided.

I was usually a Knight(Fighter) or Rouge. Easier to work with.

It's definitely not easy, but it can be pretty fun. One of my most enjoyable wizards casted spells by damaging himself and his allies. I knocked out the whole party but the tank several times in a last ditch effort to finish off bosses. It was great.

Roll20 is great though.

I got kicked out of my old group for "ruining the experience" I kept trying to push the rules and see what was possible and the DM kind of went along with it. I would do shit like deflect anvils with my fist and drop mansions on people so the rest of the group got sick of it and banned me.

In fifth grade I was part of a weekly D&D group using 3.5, and later I read the rulebook and became a DM. I got a lot of my friends into it that way, and still occasionally play with them. The rules they use for campaigns are different than 3.5, but I give them counsel if need want design advice pertaining to 3.5. I stopped DMing a while ago, I wasn't very adept at it.

What's the fun of having a game like DND if you can't see just how far you can go with the limits of the game? Doing some textbook LARPer crap is boring. There's nothing interesting about doing the same shit over and over again. "Oh we're gonna fight Goblins and then kill the dragon and save the princess and we're going to artificially extend this by about ten weeks through doing the same heroic cliche shit before.

No fuck that, I like the runs where everyone is over the top and not taking it seriously because that's WAY more interesting.

There is a sanity check that on a fail, you can gain a mutant ability. A good number of them are negative, but my friend managed to hit 'supernatural' abilities per roll.

The DM made us roll each time someone says a shitty meme, and one of my friends obtained 14 mutations in a single session, which was from failed rolls. He became lucky and obtained basically superpowers. Yesterday, he lost his character because he ascended to a demigod.

Explorers are interesting players, but they have a tendency to get out of character if their curiosity isn't satisfied by the content of the campaign, or if their primary objective isn't really role-playing (which is a crucial aspect of playing and enjoying D&D). However, explorers can be good DMs because they're interested in the limits of the design and can create unique challenges for players.

I'd agree, when the DM designs a campaign with conveyor-belt grindfests the appeal of combat wears thin quickly. That's more the DM's fault than the design of the core game, however. As a DM you have to cater to the playstyles of your group and find novel ways for them to work together to solve problems. Sometimes it happens that one player just doesn't fit in the group (for any number of reasons) and you have to ask them to leave or adapt so everyone else can enjoy the campaign. That's just part of being a DM.

There are campaigns where role-playing isn't prioritized, but it's rarer. The majority of D&D players enjoy roleplaying their characters seriously.

I have someone that would DM if we wait a bit longer. Maybe a week or so.

If we could do a Sep7agon Roll20, I would definitely participate. In fact, I don't think we'd have any shortage of players. Finding a DM is the only issue.
