My friend bought me the GoT book for my birthday.

So I'm reading it out of politeness, at least it's helping to pass the time while my face re-forms itself

But from what I understand... am I really the only one who doesn't care for this series?

The others are probably hiding from the torch mobs, come to think of it.

Sometimes you see someone say something, but not very often.

I'm being very kind about it though, because he didn't have to get me a gift. When he asks me what I think of it I'm going to subtly shift the conversation to discussing mere plot points, like: "Oh, wasn't that part shocking?" and, "I didn't realise that so-and-so with the such-and-such."

That approach is almost guaranteed to work.

Why don't you enjoy it? Just curious.

I don't enjoy his writing style (although I'm not unreasonable, he has a good flow, which is why it's easy to just skim through), or his... anything, really. I don't really feel like launching into an exhaustive explanation. There's nothing I'd want to emulate. I enjoy writers whose work and imagination I admire.
