Fair enough, though, as the conversation followed, I was more bringing question to its origins, rather than how we run things today, which, though not perfect (as shown by the OP and... by the pudding), is... better.

Seriously. Pure-bred animals have MORE health problems.

I think he was just adding on from what you had said.

Mongrels might be Mongrels but they are still generally healthier specimens when compared to pure-breed dogs. Genetic diversity is a good thing after all.

Selective breeding is best breeding.

All of my pitbulls have been descended from world class fighting dogs who can trace their routs back to the earliest frontier apbts that rose during the late 19th century.

Obviously I condone any sort of animal cruelty including dog fighting. But it doesn't stop me from reaping the genetic rewards breeders have spent the last 100 years perfecting

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
My Dad refuses to buy pugs on the account that they are essentially bred to have breathing difficulties, and any other dog that are the unfortunate product of selective/in-breeding.

Hell, I'm still amazed that Cruft's Dog Show still goes on as it is, albeit some minor changes to the rules so that you can't  create a cute dog at the expense of fucking it's quality of life up. (Anymore than being the pet of a Cruft's competitor can, as well as the centuries of breeding have already done).

I do love pugs, but yeah I'd never buy one because they are an abberation against natural selection. Supporting people breeding them to be like that is pretty messed up, I wouldn't however have a problem with adopting them <.<

A Good (as in moral) breeder won't inbreed dogs, the problem is they don't get show quality dogs, so as usual being moral isn't a lucrative business.

My Great Dane is now almost 15 years old. Look up the average lifespan of a Great Dane.

She's not show quality. You can't see her back 2 ribs and she has undesirable markings (ones that would disqualify her from showing)
Her health and her appearance of the result of her breeder actually caring about the dogs. She goes out of her way to breed healthy dogs with each other, not show dogs who are related. Dog showing is kind of sick

Hmm this thread really has me doubting if I should ever get a mini golden retriever...
