I actually followed a similar diet and lost about 80lbs in 6 months. I consumed mostly one type of food for a week on end, excluding a day or two of chicken or fish. Instead of sodas and juices, I switched to coffee and water. I did work out 3 times a week, an hour at a  time.

I've heard worse analogies.

I think there's a distinction between simply lacking self-control and actively taking a stance against self-control. He's a hedonist, and he knows and embraces that. Hedonists tend to be very ambitious, and climbing Mt. Everest is more ambitious than climbing anything else. Carpe diem, and such.

It would take a degree of self-restraint for a person who wants to climb Mt. Everest to not ever actually try it (because, spoiler alert, trying to climb Mt. Everest is dumb as fuck).
