I dunno where to put this and I have no idea what I'm doing or how any of this works.  This is what I've got so far: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/q6RH8K. But do I actually have to assemble it myself? Does it all come separate at different times? Am I doing anything wrong?  Tune in now to help me out.

You can pay someone to put it together for you, but it's incredibly easy. Watch a few guides, work on cable management, take your time and you'll be fine. My build took about seven hours to complete, two hours of that was simply prepping the case.

Also, really good choice in power supply, I have the same exact one and it has served me well with a computer that stays on for months on end.

Prepping the case?
I also just picked whatever with some of the highest reviews.  But I'm terrified to screw something up after all the shit I went through with my laptop.

After a brief glance at the site, the site like a cross-site parts aggregator. All the parts there are simply links to various vendors that sell those parts, and you will have to order each and every item separately from those various vendors (or you can group them if possible, for example, to save on shipping from Amazon).

And yes, everything will arrive separately, and it's up to you to put everything together once they all arrive, respectively. But thankfully putting together a machine is not difficult at all. I'd say the hardest part about building my machine was trying to withhold my erection.

Everything you picked is fine and they'll all play nice together. I'm not a big fan of the case, but computer cases are almost always a personal cosmetic choice and rarely does anything to the actual functionality.

Prepping the case is just shit like adding the fans in the right places and taking out unnecessary stuff like hard drive bays. Mine only took so long cause I added four fans and took out a hard drive bay. Most of your time will probably be spent on cable management. You shouldn't be terrified, five year old kids can build a computer, it just requires time and research and not even that much.

Finding an alright case was hard.  They're so boxy and basic

I've been out of the loop with regards to hardware for a while, but I can't find anything particularly wrong about your setup.

Aside from maybe the i7. Nobody needs an i7 for general use or even for high-end gaming. It's only useful if you're doing incredibly CPU-intensive stuff, such as encoding high-resolution video footage with a program that doesn't make use of your graphics card. If you wanna save some cash, I'd say go with an i5.

Cases are entirely cosmetic and does nothing more than reflect the aesthetic choice of the owner. The reason they have the same basic box interior is because it's the ideal structure for all your components.

And if you're going to listen to HC and drop to an I5, use the money you save on a SSD for your OS, you'll thank me later.

You should work for Alienware support.  Your help is on par with theirs.

Is there any benefit to have two 4gb of ram over one 8gb?

The short answer is no. The difference between two 4GB sticks and one 8GB is so miniscule that it's not even worth considering.

Well, here's a couple factors to keep in mind: a) Sometimes, after many years, RAM modules can go bad. If you had two, and one of them were to go bad and had to be thrown away, you'd still have a functioning computer. b) If you use one high-capacity module, you'll have more free space for future upgrades.

Honestly, I'd say just go for an 8GB one. And then balance that against the how good the brand is (i.e., it's better to get 2 4GB modules from a trustable, high-quality RAM manufacturer than an 8GB one from a shitty one).
