Get a dog. The single best thing, I've realized, about not owning a cat anymore is that there's no longer little amounts of cat litter spread out over the carpet in the bathroom. I'll put up with all the shedding dog hair in the world before I deal with that again.

How big is your place? Dogs take up a shit tonne of space unless you get like the cat-sized dog.
Cats tend to destroy shit when young but don't need as much attention overall.
Cat piss smells like a bunch of fuck - but if you buy the right granules, they can soak up the smell. You can also put a leash on your cat and let him hang outside until you get home.

If you can't afford a vet, you can't afford a pet.

Birds are actually ver affectionate and have lots of personality. But if you're going to live in an apartment, don't get one, as they're quite loud at times (unless it's a finch). Also, don't get one if you're going to be away a lot. Like a dog, they like to spend time with their owner.
