I've only seen like 3 animes, and only legitimately liked one. Baccano. It's an amazing series, and even though it's really short, it's endlessly entertaining and clever. I highly recommend you watch it.

Is there a particular genre you're looking for? Thriller/psychological, fantasy, sci-fi, action, comedy, romance, romance-comedy?

Sci-fi, action and fantasy, you can leave some romance for Mrs Batch in her own time, I just dont like those so much xD

I forgot to add Blood-C, Ga Rei Zero, Log Horizon, The Garden of Words, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and 5 Centimeters per Second (the latter three being movies that would be more for the lady).

I wouldn't recommend this any more, if you're keeping up with season 2.
The quality has dropped horribly.

Season 2 is being produced by Studio DEEN if you know their reputation.

Fucking seriously? I had no idea DEEN picked up the second season. I have noticed an overall drop in quality, but that wasn't enough to dissuade me from finishing it. I only ever drop an anime if I just find it unbearably awful, like Date a Live and Infinite Stratos.

Yeah, it's bad. I haven't watched the two recent episodes because nothing worthwhile has happened in five.

And honestly, I liked IS and Date a Live, even if they both had bad points. Although might have been something to do with the lack of expectation, as opposed to the quality Log Horizon should be at.

Fate/Zero

Basically modern day magi summon legendary figures from different time periods to fight along side them in a battle royal for the holy grail.

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works

Fate/Zero is the prequel to this. Currently only one season has aired with the second starting up in April. The story telling is a bit different since it's based on a visual novel where Shirou (the main character) tells the story from a first person perspective as opposed to the third person narrative that the Fate/Zero light novel had. Some people prefer the latter approach over the former.

Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners

It's set in the same universe as the prior two, but it explores what's essentially the seedy underbelly of that universe. It's a series of eight movies that follows a woman named Shiki with an ability to see the death of things and sever the lines that bind them into existence with what's known as the mystic eyes of death perception as she investigates a series of paranormal events. Some of the movies are out of order chronologically, but that's fine. The story is meant to be told like that.

When I streamed these movies I had to put up an NSFW warning due to gratuitous violence, gore, nudity, rape, and drug use.

Zero and KnK fall on the mature side while F/SN:UBW falls kind of in the late teen/young adult category. All three series are also adapted by Ufotable so they have great sound and animation.

Eh, fair enough. I went into IS and DaL with the expectations of them being different from most other harem anime, which my friends kept insisting was the case.

But what I got instead was shit so generic and horrible attempts at taking itself seriously that I just couldn't finish them. The only positive point DaL has is that the characters are designed by the same artist that designs Hyperdimension Neptunia's characters, which I'm a fan of. But that wasn't enough to redeem the series in my eyes.

Oh, speaking of 5cm, Children who Chase Lost Voices from the same director might interest the OP and his wife.

It'll do that to you.

If you're looking for something to contrast it, Gurren Lagann is the way to go.

Finish Kill la Kill

Try Gurren Lagann (dubbed) for the better experience by that studio

Baccano! is also very good

A Certain Magical Index

Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night are ones I THINK YOU NEED TO WATCH NOW

for something more chill and slice of life, try Golden Time and Toradora!
