Recently, my mother has been making several proclamations about how proud she is of me. It wouldn't be much of a nuisance had I not asked her each time to stop. It's not bad to have your parents be proud of you, of course, but I just don't want their pride. I'm not doing things in life for their pride - their pride, essentially, is of no value to me.

In saying that, let's assume I do want their pride. However, I still don't think I'd want it now. Who am I? Nobody. I am a nobody. I've accomplished nothing of merit; I don't even have a degree yet. So I get decent grades, read a lot of books and am generally smarter than most people I know - but I still haven't done anything worthwhile or influential.

Now, when I've accomplished something, then it'd be a different story.


Must be a parent thing.

Ugh, my mother does the same thing.  And then says something about "the man I'm becoming."

ITT ungrateful teens

They're proud of your intellect.  Not many parents can say that their kids are intelligent.  Sure a ton of kids out there play sports or play an instrument, but none of those things necessarily require a high intelligence.

Just smile and say, "Thanks, mom/dad."  All they want is your approval for how you were brought up.  Many parents see their child's intellect as a measurement of how well they functioned as parents.  Even if they didn't teach you what they know, they provided the environment that enabled you to accrue so much knowledge.

My mom tells me all the time, and yet, I don't feel like I've done much but stayed in school with moderately good grades, don't exactly feel like I've earned any respect from anyone considering how I've lived my life. Its nice I guess, if you consider A's.B's, and C's to be proud of...

If you just say thanks when she says how proud she is it'll blow over faster

It's just another way of them saying how much they love you. Part of it is that the child never loves their parents as much as parents love their child.

I see it akin to how I want to constantly love the shit out of my dog, but he's like, "No, I ain't havin' none of that."

Ugh, this is kind of... like me, actually. My parents are proud of me? For what? I didn't do it for them, although them being proud of me is a convenient side effect.
