I've been deeply depressed before and I still have to deal with it on a regular basis, I know how it screws with your brain and makes you feel like nothing will ever get better

but you can still fight that feeling and overcome it - the disease changes the way you think, but it doesn't completely dominate your actions

It's because the disorder isn't them, and they are not their disorder. They're separate. If they weren't separate, medication wouldn't even be possible. You would just be permanently depressed with nothing to do about it.

It all depends on what levels of neurotransmitters are normally present in the brain
A person who had low levels of serotonin all his life would be characterized by that
If his serotonin levels suddenly spiked to that of what most people have, he would change
It's not like he would get back to his real self if his brain chemistry returned to "normal"
Medication just keeps the levels of chemicals in your body balanced so that you can function how you have always functioned

Alzheimers. My maternal grandmother had it and the last few years of her life was horrible for her. Barely recognized my mother. Since it's genetic I might get it when I'm older, it's one of the few future possibilities I'm actually worried about.

Hopefully by the time I develop it (if I do) medicine has advanced enough to care for it more efficiently. Otherwise, I'd honestly want to be put to sleep before I forget who I am.
