You can't be serious. Losing someone most often means that the person has passed away, or died. Passed away, just like "losing" someone means that the person has died.

In this case, the person was oblivious to this, and thought that the aunt had literally been lost. Comedy is when someone doesn't interact with reality like they're supposed to.
