I'm not sure of it's just a passing interest that will fade with time but I've been giving serious thought about wanting to learn to play the clarinet. Regardless of whether or not I'll go through with it, I'll have to wait until I'm back to work anyways, a good beginner's clarinet starts at around $650. I've never played an instrument before in my life, which is partly what led me to choosing the clarinet over others. I originally thought about the oboe but they are not only significantly more expensive, but supposedly extremely difficult to play. The clarinet came up after some light research and supposedly it's no harder or easier than most instruments.

Has anyone ever played an instrument before? How was it? I'm still figuring out how to start if I do decide to go through with it.

I played trombone in high school

Are you teaching yourself or getting lesson?

Also go with rental until you're sure it's something you want to purchase

It would have to be in-person lessons from an instructor. Two of my four roommates are leaving at the end of this lease and the remaining two describe me as the "perfect roommate" because I'm so quiet so I'd rather not do anything to flip that sentiment upside down by blaring noise throughout the complex. So my options are either practice by myself in the middle of a barren parking lot or learn from somebody in a place designed for such use.

i hate work and i hate practice, and learning instruments is a lot of work and a lot of practice

i've dabbled with keyboards and DAWs but never on a serious level, because i already have enough unmarketable hobbies as it is

Yeah, I tried to learn guitar and piano. Now guitars lie in dust and piano as was out of tune still is out of tune.

I'm bad at keeping up regular practice and I have thought about my capability of forming habits and routine and while I'm good at building up routine I always end up consciously thinking about it instead of doing it automatically, even if I spent a lot of time doing it every day.

Also another problem with musical instruments and learning it is that you are not doing it in vacuum and that it won't sound great while you still learn.

Long live NoNolesNeckin.

Ya fuckin' ganderneck.
I really regret not learning to play one growing up tbh, but now all practice time in my life is dedicated to visual art and virtually nothing else.

My dad is a jazz/metal bass player, and you would think that would've influenced me into wanting to be a musician as well but I was a dumb kid who didn't want to do anything but play video games until I was in high school and finally decided to take drawing more seriously.

Giving up piano is one of the greatest regrets of my life.

Although that is no doubt primarily aesthetic, in that I think it would be cool as fuck to rock up somewhere, discover there’s a piano there, and just bust something out.

Yeah you'll need frequent lessons to be anywhere near competent but also a lot of practice just fucking around on the instrument to get to know it

What do you hope to do with the clarinet?

I just wanted to be competent with a more practical hobby. I consider myself well-read and somewhat in shape, but I'm lacking in something like this. Just being able to play decently for myself is more than enough for me.

That's cool
The clarinet is more of an ensemble instrument though so there's not a lot of solo stuff you can find

I always wanted to at least play piano. Instruments like guitar and violin been appealing for me too. But with time I realized that world needs professional drummers.
