Did anyone else find Vader's pun groan worthy? I've been trying to figure out why I basically cringed at it, when he does joke a fair amount in all the other films. So I compared some of his other jokes lines;
YouTube

to his Rogue One line (link will probably get copyright claimed);
YouTube

And I dunno, I can't really put my finger on it. I think it's because it's like a self referential joke, something a fan would say but shouldn't actually be put to film. "Wouldn't it be cool if Darth Vader thought his choking ability was totally epic and funny?" It'd be like if the Emperor made some pun about Luke finding it "shocking" how much it hurt being electrified by him

I think the problem is that JEJ emphasized "choke" in the line. If it was just "be careful not to choke on your aspirations Director" delivered in his usual tone, that would've been better. Instead it was "be careful not to choke on your aspirations", which wasn't Vader's usual style.

Anakin always quips. As potato's video showed, he does it in the OT to. I think it's just people are looking for an excuse to dislike the movie. If you cringe at "Don't choke on your aspirations", you should also cringe at "I find your lack of faith disturbing."

But none of his "funny" sayings in the OT were in reference to his ability to force choke people like we got in Rogue One.
"Wow my force powers are so fucking cool" is basically what we get out of the line and it's not Vader at all.

I think you're looking a little to deep into that line. Anakin quips. Always has.

Darth Vader isn't Anakin Skywalker. He's way cooler and far more badass.

I wouldn't call Vader's lines "quips". Quips are more... Peppy,  Vader's were more theatrical, dramatic. You got the sense that Vader has an appreciation for the dramatic and has a tendency for theatrics.

I am not butthurt over it, I just think it could have been executed better.
Really the problem for me is the emphasis on choke. I'd need to see the movie again though.

I hope they bring back the Kaminoan Uprising/ Anti-Troopers in Rebels or something.

Also, are the 501st still Vader's Fist? Or has that name been retconned too?

"People enjoy something I don't so they must have autism".

NIN is an edgy knock off of Radiohead. Trent hasn't produced anything of worth in more than ten years.

that doesn't even make sense on any level--if anything it's the other way around

radiohead may have formed as a band earlier than NIN, but they took 7 or 8 years to put anything out, and NIN was already well-established

also this has nothing to do with star wars--gg proving your autism

Yeah that line was bad, though. Doesn't matter if he's thrown out other one-liners in the series.

Tbh I probably would have preferred Vader being absent from the movie entirely.

Sure, that's fair. Puns are egregious in a film attempting to mirror gripping war dramas. It deflates him as a villain, and presents him as cartoonish. The first time it was done in ANH, it was surprising and new. The second time it was done in ESB it was done in the background. In Rogue One, the scene existed not to move the plot or develop a character, but to intro Vader in an already limping film. The scene could be excised entirely, and the story and characters would be no different; that's a cardinal sin in filmmaking and storytelling. The quip at the end is just distracting. The fact that it's even being discussed means it bothered people.

It's a minor thing, and the movie had many other significant problems anyway. Speaking only of the script, I'd say Jyn's multiple cheesy speeches, Saw's existence, and Chirrut's Force mantra are all bigger problems than a bad line in an unnecessary scene.

I mean, Darth Vader is basically a cartoon, though, so I don't really see a problem there. You can't look at his goofy-ass Halloween costume and tell me he doesn't look totally out of place every scene he's in. I agree that the film would probably be better without him, but at the same time, the film was made for fanboys by fanboys and we all know that.

"The scene could be excised entirely, and the story and characters would be no different; that's a cardinal sin in filmmaking and storytelling."

...is it? Personally, I just call that consistency of character, which would be a "cardinal sin" by that logic.

I agree. Asian guy was the film's Jar Jar (not that Jar Jar is annoying or bad--I'm just throwing you a bone).

I think saw qualifies as the jar jar of the film. Over the top to the point of being irritating.

If there were a forum that discussed nin in detail I'm sure you'd be all over it. Nothing wrong with obsessing over something you really enjoy. You know, as long as it's a healthy obsession.

The ending bit with Vader was the only outstanding part of the entire movie though. The planet scene was pretty good, but the ending topped it off to an otherwise boring movie.

Yeah, that's my primary issue with it. Its original content is boring, and it uses in-universe references as a storytelling crutch.

The main villain is pussified (is that a word?) by Vader and Tarkin, the main cast is almost an afterthought at the end in favor of a literal handoff to ANH, and Jyn herself is a static, boring character compared to the prequels' Obi Wan, or Rey. I could go a bit more in depth but I'm cooking dinner. All in all it's a very average movie, which is a shame.

I am a meticulous person; I thrive on detail. Details serve to enrich the whole. I think the line was lackluster and could have been altered, I don't see how that makes me autistic.

I don't see a problem with this.

The idea is that Krennic thinks very highly of himself (he wears a fucking cape), but really he's just a worm. Albeit a resourceful, manipulative worm, but a worm nonetheless.
