Saw Rogue One earlier. It was alright, it definitely had a slow start and all those cuts that kept happening from scene to scene started to worry me. However once the movie gets to that rainy planet, that's where it just kept getting better and better for me. The third act of the movie is where it shined a lot and the ending was fantastic.

If the beginning of the movie was paced and cut together better, this movie could have been legendary. If I were to rate it out of 10, I'd give it the highest 8 I could offer.

Just got back from Rogue One myself. I'll be talking spoilers, so if you haven't seen the movie, skip this post. I'm leaving this post unmarked, though, because I assume everyone here who cares has already seen the movie.

Good movie, enjoyed myself. I like the girl. I didn't like how she was the only memorable character. I didn't like the Hispanic dude and the Asian guy was super annoying. The whole movie just felt like they were ticking off boxes on a minority checklist and that was very distracting.

Remember when they crash-land on the surface of that one planet, and when the Hispanic dude comes to check everybody, they're all just sitting down as if no crash happened? Yeah that was dumb. Even the Asian guy was still perched there, meditating or some shit. But I guess he's force-sensitive (somehow!?!?), so maybe he just used the force or something. Sure whatever.

I did like how they managed to tell a story that's kinda small in scope, but put it under such a huge, monolithic setting--it brought me back to the best parts of Phantom Menace, where they kinda did the same thing (if you used Anakin as your lens).

The effects they used to bring Peter Cushing back to life had me absolutely floored. Holy fuck, technology is amazing. I wonder what the implications this holds for the future of cinema? You can bring anyone back now. That's kinda crazy, and a bit creepy too. You could easily have an entire movie filled with deceased actors and actresses and have it be totally convincing, like they never died at all. I'm really not sure how to feel about that.

Also, as a huge critic of the OT, I do love how they addressed a critical flaw in a New Hope--the Death Star being so easily destroyed with a Legend of Zelda-tier weakspot. They justified it beautifully in this movie and I highly appreciate that. I'm not sure whether this makes Episode IV a better movie for me or not, though--I'll have to think about that. My gut feeling is "no," but I dunno--like I said, I really appreciated that nonetheless.

Score was underwhelming, just like TFA. Only one piece of music stuck out.

Hayden not being in the Darth Vader suit was disappointing.

I don't get this often, but the ending--during Vader's wrath, with Leia--did indeed warm the cockles of my heart. It was really cool seeing how they tied it all together, and it ends in a perfect segue into a New Hope.

Overall 6-7/10--about as good as Force Awakens, and as good as a Star Wars movie needs to be.

Hayden in the suit would not work well. Vader is 6'8"; the actor who was in the suit in the OT (excluding the swordfighting scenes) was a 6'5" - 6'6" body builder. Hayden is 6'2"-6'3" and not muscular.

Physical presence is such an important part of Vader on screen; he wouldn't be as intimidating if he was shorter and had more spindly limbs.

Not exactly, but he mainly complained that he didn't care for the characters because they weren't all Luke Skywalker basically and that the movie doesn't spend an hour and half explaining the backstory of each individual character.

I liked this squad because they were all just regular people with nothing too extraordinary about them taking on the much more intimidating and powerful Galactic Empire. They were pretty much the same as any other Rebel Alliance soldier and I really appreciated that.

Edit: He also kept bitching about not having not enough Vader scenes. The Death Star was never about Vader in the first place and in A New Hope, Vader was cautious about the Imperial Officers wanting to use the Death Star's full power to completely destroy a planet because it would disturb the balance of The Force or something like that. The Death Star was all Tarkin and Rogue One introduced Jyn's father and that guy Krennic.

I agree with the character thing, I just didn't like or connect with any of them, which made it hard to care about the things happening to them. I guess I was kind of happy when KS20 died because I found him really annoying, but that was about it.

I think Krennic is a really great character. The Catalyst novel is just about him, the Ersos, and Tarkin, and it's great.

His main strengths are that he is \manipulative on a personal level, and that he's resourceful. However, he is a terrible manager, is erratic, overly ambitious, and disregards the chain of command at every turn. Tarkin definitely had a reason to take control of the project.

In the catalyst novel Krennic's thoughts on Tarkin are basically "arrgh, my greatest rival!". Tarkin's response is "aww, that's cute". Krennic was always a joke to him. I love how in RO at the beginning Krennic seems all powerful and in charge, but as the film progresses we see that he's nothing compared to the likes of Tarkin.

Some of my complaints with the movie:
Spoiler
- The tentacle monster thing that reads the imperial pilot's mind was awkward as hell and didn't feel like it should have been in the movie. I know there's some other weird shit in Star Wars, but this scene was where my friends and I looked at each other and said "Uh... what is going on here?"

- The names for the characters were kind of hard to make out sometimes. I had to look up online what their names were after the movie. Everyone else that plays a major part in any Star Wars film had easy to remember names, but this one had names I couldn't make out. Maybe on a second or third watch I could get them all together.

- First act of the movie was brought together rather terribly and I didn't like how in one scene we see Jyn in prison for about 10 seconds then it jumps to another planet with a main character for another 20 seconds or so then it jumps again. The reshoots for the movie may have played a part in this and unfortunately it showed big time here.

- On the rainy planet where Jyn is climbing the tower to get to her father, she gets to the top, barely even touches a Stormtrooper's foot, and he hilarious falls to his death. I chuckled at this part cause it looked really dumb.

- The music was pretty lackluster throughout the movie. Some of it was okay, but some of it was pretty bland and boring. When Jyn and Cassian were climbing the archives terminal, there was an odd sounding song playing here. I think they shouldn't have had any music playing during this part. Another thing, we see Cassian get shot in this same area, tumble down and hits a bunch of bars on the way down, and still was able to catch up to Jyn on top of the tower to shoot Krennic.

- Last but not least, WHERE THE FUCK WAS PORKINS IN THAT SPACE BATTLE?? THEY HAD THE OTHER GUYS BUT THEY DIDN'T HAVE PORKINS! YOU GOTTA BE SHITTING ME!!

I don't really understand how that tentacle monster even works. It looks like an animal and not a sentient alien to me, so how does it even tell you it knows the person is telling the truth. And why doesn't the pilot guy lose his mind like he is apparently supposed to? He just goes like slightly eccentric at most.

They should have had one of those droids that Vader uses on Leia in Ep 4 to get information from her. It's that flying ball droid with a bunch of needles and shit. That would have felt more like Star Wars and a lot less SyFy channel movie-ish.

I'll decide where RO is when I rewatching it. At the moment, it's one of the better ones. Biggest complaint is that I can't remember the name of anyone in the squad except Jyn and K2, and that most people didn't get any development.

I wasn't really into it but I had trouble paying attention. Cheese Potato pretty much already covered all the problems I had with it. I'll probably rewatch it at some point but as it stands, it's down there with Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones for me. Not a bad movie, just wasn't all that great.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention--I really liked how they showed the darker side of the rebellion for a couple scenes. Not everyone who's a rebel is this squeaky-clean good guy who would never stab anyone in the back or engage in some underhanded shit in the battlefield. I can't get enough of that grey morality stuff which is SO FUCKING ABSENT in the original trilogy.

Opposite as RO, which was three hours long but felt like an hour and a half. RotS felt like it was six hours long. Every single scene was way too drawn out and it was dreadful.

5 and 1 are just my buffer movies, being the best of the "okay" and "dislike" tiers respectively.

It was weird as fuck, but like I've said before, there's weird shit in Star Wars but that scene took the cake for the weirdest scene in any Star Wars movie.

The scene was useless anyways cause when Cassian, Baze, and Donnie Yen were in the cell next to the pilot, Cassian just tells him "Your the imperial pilot!" and then he suddenly gets his memory back.

Fanservice is there just like TFA, but TFA's was implemented more seamlessly. It's jarring here.
Sorry, but not really if you ask me. TFA threw stuff in your face so obnoxiously it was like some old guy holding a picture up and going

"REMEMBER THIS?????"

The only time I felt that with Rogue One was the stupid blue milk in the beginning. But it wasn't as in your face as the chess board thing from TFA, or whatever else they managed to throw in your face that my mind blocked off.
so what you're saying is

it's the dark souls 3 of star wars movies???

you can point to a lot of franchises that do that

we like to look back a lot, but it's having a really toxic effect on media

that said TFA is still my favorite SW movie

I rewatched the trailers to try and figure out more of what they reshot, seems like initially Jyn was gonna be the main Rebel character and not Cassian, and was gonna be a bit more Rebel sympathetic. Whereas in the actual film she's like apathetic at best about the rebellion and then abruptly gives the pro assault the death star speech that doesn't but then also does work.

I still think they Suicide Squad Joker'd Saw Gerrera, he seemed more like the weary leader type character in the trailers instead of a crazy cyborg. His lines in the trailer being about what Jyn would become if she kept fighting gave an interesting tone I thought, but then none of that is in the movie.

The rumours I see people saying are that they changed the ending in reshoots, but I think more likely they changed around the whole first act considering how badly the scenes flow.

Pretty much
