Are there moshpits at festivals, or is that a rock/Taylor Swift exclusive thing?
well at this specific festival there were three different stages, all with different styles of electric music. the stage that played most of the basshead music was where all the moshing was going on, which was actually really fucking fun to get into.
Moshing is fun. Much better than crowdsurfing, especially when the people closest to the stage are sniveling weaklings.
people die in that shit though

It's not as dangerous as it seems. I've gotten hurt more often from crowdsurfing and circlepits than moshing or walls of death.

I'm saying that people don't die as often as you think they do. People die swimming as well, but I'm not going to stop doing it because of that. You can't die if you don't live first.

Moshing itself won't kill you, silly. It's things related to it that do so. Maybe I get a cramp while swimming, or an undercurrent catches me, or someone that's starting to drown carries me down as well while trying to claw up. You can't account for everything; I'm not saying that putting yourself in danger purposefully is ever good, but refusing to live because you'll die is silly too.

It's also why there are more "rules" to moshing now too, by the way. You're supposed to stop if someone falls down (which can happen easily while crowdsurfing as well).

You take the risk of getting a cold when you go out in the rain, the risk of melanoma if you go out without sunscreen, the risk of drowning if you swim. Possible danger isn't the same as significant danger; part of rationality is being able to understand that you aren't guaranteed to die just by taking a walk in the snow, or cooking overy a fire.

Yeah, you're kind of misattributing this behavior here. It's done because it's fun and energetic, goes well with the music. If you see someone fall, you stop and help them up. If someone drops their phone/glasses, you stop and help look. If someone wants out, you let them. It's not as instinctive and wildly unruly as you're saying it is.

it was just so surreal watching almost the entire crowd mosh in-sync with the music and each other. i've never seen anybody crowdsurf but i can assume that it would be a lot more painful to be dropped while crowdsurfing than fall while you're moshing.

None of these things are tantamount to moshing, though. You're not "refusing to live" if you don't go to mosh pits--you're just intelligent. You aren't "refusing to live" if you go out in the rain--you're just intelligent.

It's easy enough for me to think that, "Hmm, maybe slamming into a bunch of people and stomping around could potentially severely injure somebody, if not kill them" than it is for me to visualize the possibility of me getting struck by lightning, and you're basically comparing those two things right now, and it's kinda silly.

Yes and no. I got dropped head-first at a concert I went to Friday. Turns out there were two other people crowd surfing in my direction and we all collided into each other. Thankfully people are cognicant of their surroundings; the people around us stopped and helped us back onto our feet.

I'm not comparing them, I'm specifically pointing out how silly it is to say "people died doing that before". People have died going to see a movie. Point is that it doesn't happen often enough to pose a significant risk.

A grand total of nine deaths between 1996 and 2004. And the crowd goes mild. The reason that I don't provide one covering the years since? Google just gives me a lot of moshing videos.

- Nine deaths too much. "Mild" would be 0 deaths and only deaths.
- Doesn't account for the years between '04 and now.

Too bad her source only helps me, because I'm not concerned with just deaths. Injuries are important, too.

10,000 annual injuries.

That's too much to be considered intelligent.
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=4804513&page=1

Quote
As many as 50 concertgoers at New Jersey's Bamboozle Festival this weekend reportedly sought medical attention after a mosh pit got out of hand.

Witnesses reported seeing several of the 70,000 attendants treating bloody noses and worse, getting carried out on stretchers.

Yes, and then go back and read that literally everything they say relating to injury is a result of "falling from six or seven feet" or an actual quote directly after that statistic you just claimed: "There is no way to crowd surf or stage dive safely consistently".

The injuries are mostly attributed to crowdsurfing, not moshing. Which is very confusing thay the article doesn't seem to make a difference in terms; they're two different things.

- They use the term "crowd-surfing" three times in the article, Aria. Never was it in reference to any specific number of injuries.

Just admit that it's stupid.
