So the show is going in a different direction but hopefully they keep some major events the same.

SPOILERS FOR DANCE WITH DRAGONS BELOW
Spoiler
Do you think that kid Olly is going to be the one to stab Jon? Last week's episode seemed to foreshadow him feeling resentment for Jon and the wildlings.

I'd be immensely pissed off if the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch gets
Spoiler
ganked by a punk-ass little kid.

But presumably the battle they showed last week will take place in some form in Winds of Winter, so I'm not really sure how to explain that timeline.

Um, no. The battle last week already happened in the books.

I don't remember that, where in the books exactly?

Cotter Pyke takes several ships at Jon's command to Hardhome to rescue the Wildlings there.  A few weeks later, Jon gets a letter from Cotter saying that the Wildlings are eating their own dead and dying, and that there are "dead things in the water."

I've forgotten that, but how does it imply they were attacked by the Others? Sounds to me like they just ran out of food.

The books already had a Nights Watch vs Others battle at the Fist. The show cut it out so they're making up for it now

Fun fact:  D&D royally pissed off HBO for going overbudget with this episode.

Well, fuck what they think.  That episode was phenomenal.

HBO is very pro consumer and in touch with fan bases, they knew they were going to make the money back easily so they kept giving them money.

I feel like it's basically been thrown in our faces all season that the little kid will be a part of it. Even my mom has picked up on it. A lot of us have also noticed the line from Sam when he said "Jon always comes back" as a sort of foreshadowing.

The thing that confuses me is that all season, Jon has made it very clear that they need to bring the Wildlings south of the wall to keep them from turning into wights. Yet the little kid has basically ignored this point because he doesn't think it's worth it. So when they come back with the majority of the Wildlings slaughtered and turned into wights before their very eyes, and they find out Jon's concerns were completely legitimate, just to have that kid will stab the shit out of him anyway? Because I truly doubt the bastard letter is going to happen. Ah well, probably just going to end up being another inconsistency to add to the list within show-canon.

Pink Letter was written by the Mannis. :P

OT:  It kind of makes sense for the kid to be angry at Jon for bringing over Wildlings in peace.  His whole family was butchered right in front of him by the Thenns, so of course he's going to have that mental scarring and resentment of the Wildlings.

If the show is following the books for Jon's plot, then yes.

I knew the kid would fuck it up. It sucks that Jon will be the one to take the "fall", but at least he won't make enemies with the wildlings by killing a lot of them somehow.

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
Jon's fate in the books is already unknown (if you take it at face value), but I wouldn't be surprised if they just loosely follow what happened.

Besides, Martin told the producers how it ends a while back (just in case he dies before the books are finished), so I suppose that it'll all end the same regardless of events between now and then.
