Is this what passes for good writing nowadays?

Guess what I just got done watching.

- introduce character
- make them likable/innocent
- kill them off
- everyone cries

LE EBIN TRAGEDY MEME QQ SO SAD

Yeah. The cheapest and laziest of tragedies ever.

This is supposed to be "the golden era" of television. Have an aimless plot where anyone can die. Literally--just pick any random character who isn't crucial to the plot and kill them off. INSTANT emotional response from the audience.

What's that? Waste of a decent character, you say? Nonsense! NONE of our characters are decent! In fact, we telegraph the next person who's gonna die so hard, it's a wonder why anyone's even surprised! That's how easily manipulated our audience is!

What's that? LAZY WRITING? You want to see characters suffer in ways that don't necessarily involve the go-to push-button death? NONSENSE! Remember: Everyone cries when someone dies! If they don't die, that would actually force us into writing some ORIGINAL CONFLICT!

CAN'T HAVE THAT!

sigh

I mean, there's no plot beyond "people try to survive," so it ends up becoming all about stupid character struggles and shit. Which can be reduced to, "Who's gonna die next!?"

...and that's supposed to be quality television

this is why i don't watch tv shows

Obligatory innocent/new character dying right at the start of the first season, being forgotten about for a couple of seasons, then surprise dramatic reveal of character who didn't actually die but was actually just recovering/preparing/being saved.

We also can't forget the obligatory backstab from a practical saint of a character we thought was good all along.

And, last but not least. The fucking gold standard.

A character who is medicore, doesn't do much, isn't very notable, and has short bouts of screentime, just enough to keep them barely relevant.

You know this boring slab of a meatshield exists for one purpose.

Plot shield.

Meatshield the character goes through the entire round of seasons, through thick and thin, being almost unnoticable in the background, until finally, on the very last season, on the endgame, the pawn comes into play, recieving actual character development.

And then Meatshield the Character takes the killing blow for a loved character.

It could literally be 60 seasons of out of the limelight. 1 season in the spotlight. Ded.

"Beloved" character is born.

Well, I actually know people like this. They use the whole romance thing to get the naive and inexperienced to screw them, and then move on.

Season 1 of TWD is pretty overrated. The TWD community has a boner for Frank Darabont. Season 2 is called Season 2 because there are 2 good episodes. Season 3 has some great bits and some pretty awful bits, but mixes things up rather than it just being about zombies. Season 4A had no choice but to be filler because season 3's writer fucked up, but is still decent, Season 4B is brilliant aside from 'Still'. Season 5 is excellent throughout aside from the mid-season finale.

But zombies clearly aren't your thing, Verb. You most certainly won't enjoy the later (better) seasons.

Don't forget the endings that abruptly conclude things in a needlessly complicated or sad manner, and fail at it, just to be "unique" and avoid a potentially cliché happy ending

Are you dumb? Lol, this is like going to a barbecue place and expecting them to make an amazing salad. TWD exists only for preteens who like to see extensive violence, not for complex character studies.

emigrate or degenerate. the choice is yours
Season 1 of TWD is pretty overrated. The TWD community has a boner for Frank Darabont.
Of course they do. The guy directed Shawshank Redemption and The Mist. He clearly understands how people react to the breakdown of society/the world around them as opposed to "hurr let's go find booze because I just got separated from my family, I'm obviously mentally traumatized right now lol."

The first episode succinctly captures the feeling of hopelessness and the end of civilization. The hospital was genuinely creepy and the dismembered torso girl had me feeling unsettled for several weeks. Morgan's internal conflict with his zombified wife was heartbreaking. It hit all the right notes that a zombie TV show should be doing.

Of course, that's not to say it's without its hiccups. S1 isn't a perfect season, but it came as closest the show ever did in capturing the atmosphere of the comics. AllMightyCunts are clearly greedy Jews and value saving a few bucks over maintaining consistency between the seasons. S1 and the rest of the show are like two completely different TV series.

Maybe I was a bit too harsh on S1 there. I thought it was very good, just not as amazing as the TWD community made it out to be. It certainly was best at capturing the atmosphere of the comics. Personally I thought Seasons 4B (barring Still) and 5 (barring Coda) were much better in terms of overall quality.

Season 2 had a couple good episodes but the farm was so goddamn boring. Also that one episode where they try to get a zombie out of a well was fucking stupid.
