A lot of good punk and post-hardcore stuff came out in the 90s (Alkaline Trio, Bad Religion, Hot Water Music [Stranger Than Fiction], Smoking Popes).  Most grunge stuff was great, at least until everyone was trying to copy Eddie Vedder's voice.

As for pop music, 90-96/97 was TERRIBLE.
