Yes, marching competitions can take quite a bit of work.

Video games aren't a sport, marching band is debatable.

The marching itself? I don't mean straight line marching, anybody could do that, but the marching competitions - where they have fancy twists n shit and form images and move all over the football field. It's a lot harder than it looks and there's a lot of energy that goes into it. Ya know, carrying around drums while marching in time isn't exactly easy, nor playing a horn while still trying to breath during the march. The drums are heavy and horn players can run outta breath if they don't breathe correctly, on top of keeping time. It's why after a competition most people are pouring sweat and tired as fuck.

so physical skill, physical/mental coordination, and physical endurance. seems like a similar argument in favor of competitive cheerleading's status as a sport.

now answer the bonus question

conventional understanding of physicality being key to "sport" status vs ideological understanding of sports being competitions at the most fundamental level

I'd say it's in the same category as Cheerleading. Requires physical endurance, coordination, and teamwork. Both compete in events.

No.

It is, however, a competition.

To me, things that are sports can be scored objectively, like basketball - you get a point for each basket you score. Running (x) distance in whatever time. Bowling you are score by how many pins you knock down.

Marching band is not a sport because it's scored by judges. Same with gymnastics, cheerleading, etc.

Sport (or sports) is all forms of usually competitive physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing entertainment to participants, and in some cases, spectators.

The definition of sport disagrees with everyone saying no ITT.
