George RR Martin is a millionaire author, and he could have wrote about anything. He legit created an entire new world in ASOIAF, and he consciously decided to make women oppressed in that world.

So I need to know if there's any last rebuttal against this before I cross GOT off my watchlist

The books themselves aren't misogynistic. Of course there's going to be oppression in his world; it's based on medieval England. Including stuff like that doesn't automatically make an author a misogynist, it's dependent on how you handle it. In ASOIAF in particular everyone has it pretty bad.

The show, however, is fine to a point, but Seasons 5 and 6 are especially bad for it outside of just being shit in general. GRRM had little involvement with them so the showrunners basically came up with their own rubbish and in attempting to "empower" women in their show they completely fucked up.

Depicting oppression doesn't necessarily equal promoting oppression. Are movies and books depicting slavery automatically racist to black people?

It has to do with how its depicted and how maturely the medium handles it. No one would watch Requiem for a Dream and say it's pro-drug abuse. You might find a couple idiots who think the Wolf of Wall Street promotes drug abuse, because it handles it a little more ambiguously. Then there's movies like Project X, where the movie is basically a commercial for hedonism--it's hard to watch that movie and say it's trying to spread some kind of deeper "hey kids, this is actually bad" message.

And I'm saying, while it may be the case that GoT doesn't promote misogyny through its depictions of it, it could still appear that way based on how it's directed--which would be a failure on the director's part, yes?

I'd say it features acts of misogyny, but not misogynistic in itself.

I can't comment on the pay grade between the actors and if it's based on their gender, but there's a lot of screentime split between male and female characters and there seems to be an even distribution of male and female main characters and "villains" throughout (and the same goes for killing some off).

You could even argue it's pretty liberating seeing as it has several female leads that are completely independent from a man and can hold their own (something pretty rare to non-existent in actual Medieval times).

I'm not aware of any deep meaning GoT may try to convey as I've never watched it or read the books, but regardless, you have to be able to confront terrible things and entertain the idea of them if you want to grow intellectually.
