Why is privacy a right?

Just posing the question. Why does anyone need anonymity in a society that protects free speech?

Fuck anonymity.

Names are almost always bad. The second you have a name is the second you have to maintain a persona to be taken seriously. The problem with this is that if your persona is well-liked enough, you can freely spew bullshit without consequence. On the other side of this is it's much harder to disagree with the majority because doing so would damage your persona or public image.

Yes. Anonymity is a good thing, because it allows a human flaw to be extinguished -- the ego.

Not important at all, just a luxury.

It actually feeds the ego, because the only reason you'd care about anonymity is if you're scared of having your good name tarnished.

Anonymity lets people voice their opinions without being persecuted, which in turn allows the opinion to be addressed without having it muddled (or outright ignored) because of the character of a person.

So I suppose you could say it protects the ego (and sometimes more than just the ego, even the person's wellbeing) for the individual under the guise of anonymity, but destroys it for anyone viewing the anonymous person.
