I honestly don't see the problem.  Sure it's beta as fuck but if two people can be happy from a relationship online I see that as a net good.

Don't get me wrong, its still a relationship - but you will never be able to admire that person dealing with some real life shit or appreciate their full spectrum of skills because they are unable to actually display them to you because they are limited by the medium that you are using for this relationship.

Its also doomed to not go anywhere - no way to progress any further than a simple fragile civil partnership.

It worries me in a way because the other individual is mostly seen through text. Not many emotions are exactly displayed through such words. It's a certain insecurity I've gained after the first fuck up, since a good deal of info was shared elsewhere before reaching me. I would much rather have something physical in life over a few chats here and there.

On the internet, you can invent your own persona and circlejerk with a bunch of memers, but you don't really know those people until you trust them with an aspect of your life.
