Used to have one that I picked up from an auto shop for $15 but it was stolen while I was doing laundry about a year ago when I was still in a not so great living situation. I really miss just how useful it was to always have it on me even though I initially purchased it for self defense (more like self reassurance). My multitool has a knife but it's frankly quite shitty and I don't always keep it on me anyway since it's kinda bulky.

So yeah. I'm on a budget, so cheap but good quality folding knives are what I'm after, preferably with a side clip.
There's a number of you who like knives so I figured I'd ask for suggestions.

real talk I'm not a knife guy but I'm around them enough to pick up a few things. Do you want like a cheap chinese knife you won't feel bad about losing or do you want something cool and expensive?
Expensive is out of the question and I don't care much for cool factor. It just needs to be sturdy, have a good blade, and a lock/unlock mechanism that works properly and won't unexpectedly deploy in my pocket. Something in the 2-3 inches range, and like I mentioned in the OP a side clip to I can clip it to my pants.

I'm torn between the Squid and Ontario RAT II
Might just go with the Squid for now since it's 10 bucks cheaper

people who own RATs tend to love them. I don't have one for comparison, but I do have fancy squids.
The rat should be similar in size to the kershaw on the right (though not as thin, I think) if that helps you decide any.

it looks ugly but its super functional, and the prices are really good for some of the higher end knives
