Well, clearly we have very different definitions of complex, because I'm speaking from a background in music theory, and in terms of theory, this song is no more complex than an AC/DC song.
Elaborate.

I know the song is in 4/4--Really, I'm not personally very concerned about a song's time signature.
I'm not gonna say a song is bad just because it's in 4/4, but I tend to appreciate it more if a song isn't.

It has like two (maybe three) chords in the whole song. The rhythm is 4/4. The chords are just your typical minor chords as far as I can tell. As far as technicality goes, it should be obvious there is no technical skill involved in the song whatsoever.
Why does technical skill matter? Why do chords matter? You've heard of the phrase "less is more".

I just don't understand why I should care if a song is complex according to music theory, when I could instead go by my clearly superior definition of complexity vs. simplicity.

there's a reason pop music is designed to appeal to the masses

and "simple" songs like this

YouTube

will never be on the radio

because they're actually complex
lyrically, emotionally, thematically

the reason you don't hear swans on the radio is because most people wouldn't like it
because most people want super dumbed down shit like AC/DC

You see, I'm more concerned about how a song makes you feel rather than the nuts and bolts of it. A song's structure plays a huge role in how the majority of people feel about music, but I suppose it's still largely subjective. But that's all I'm talking about.

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
But jim, 12-bar blues, swing, and Frank Sinatra is hardly complex... usually.

New flash, Jazz used to be a popular genre of music.
yeah

used to be

so how is that relevant

Quote
So, ignoring the lyrics because you're a mongoloid who thinks lyrics matter in music outside of like 4 genres, how is NIN any different than Lorde in complexity?
lorde is known for her extremely threadbare instrumentals

the reason i like lorde isn't for her instrumentals, because her instrumentals aren't very good or stimulating
i like her voice, and her lyrics

the instrumentation in any given non-instrumental NIN song is going to be more complex than any given Lorde song because he uses a lot more instruments--you could hum to any part to a lorde song and not totally butcher it

try humming to a NIN song that isn't a single
it's not really gonna work out

NIN doesn't rely on melody, and relies on rhythm instead.

Oh and the Jazz part was relevant because pop music changes constantly. Because of Lorde we're going through a minimalist phase now. In the 80s it was synth heavy. People aren't incapable of appreciating complicated music, they just aren't used to it.
I guess that's just what it boils down to, then--I like listening to music that I, and most other people, aren't used to listening to. And I think that other people should, too.

And you can hum those melodies just as easily as any Lorde melody.
Yeah, but my point is that you wouldn't be able to capture the song, whereas if you hummed Lorde's vocals, you totally could. Because she has no instrumentals. Doesn't quite work that way with Trent's shit.

Why does everyone love to hate on AC/DC so much? Like give me an actual reason, not just 'hurr they suck'.
Vapid lyrics. Basic, unchallenging song structure.
Neither of these things matter.
They do to me, shithead.
They shouldn't because that's stupid
It's stupid to not want to listen to stupid songs about stupid shit?

and doesn't stimulate my ears because of how basic it is
If that's your taste that's fine, but it has no value when critiquing a band.

There is a lot of music that is "basic" that is still stimulating. In fact, pretty much MOST music is like that. I don't think you listen to any bands aside from Tool with complex (using that term loosely) song structure, and Tool isn't as complicated as fedora nerds like to pretend.
This guy gets it.

This feels weird because I remember a time when Chupa and I would argue over music and I had autistic neckbeard opinions.
Lol, growing up is a weird experience man.
What was your username back then? Might remember
